Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Toolless TailwindCSS and Windi CSS, directly in the browser.

Features

  • Use TailwindCSS and Windi CSS directly in the browser, no build tools needed!
  • No need to learn anything about NodeJS, just edit and run index.html
  • Processes all inline styles and transforms directives like @apply
  • Prevents FOUC (flash of unstyled content)
  • Tracks document changes by running in watch mode by default
  • Parses TailwindCSS directives and replaces them with the corresponding CSS
  • Scans the document for TailwindCSS classes and adds them to the document

Note: Windify internally uses Windi CSS to generate the CSS. In the following we use TailwindCSS as a synonym for all tools that support TailwindCSS syntax.

Usage

  1. Add Windify <script> to your HTML
<!-- umd package -->
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/windify"></script>
<script>
  window.addEventListener('load', () => windify());
</script>

<!-- alternative: modern javascript -->
<script type="module">
  import windify from "https://esm.run/windify";
  window.addEventListener('load', () => windify());
</script>
  1. Start to use TailwindCSS / Windi CSS syntax in your HTML
<h1 class="bg-gray-100 hello">Hello!</h1>

Windify will process all <style lang="windify"> inline styles and transform directives like @apply

<style lang="windify">
  .hello {
    @apply
      text-purple-600 font-semibold;
    }
  }
</style>
  1. Prevent FOUC (flash of unstyled content)

FOUC is prevented by hiding the HTML content until Windify is ready.

We do this by setting the hidden attribute on html, body or the root element (see options below).

<body hidden>
    <!-- content goes here -->
</body>

Options

Windify can be configured with the following options:

| Option | Type | Default | Description | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | minify | boolean | true | minify the output | | parseCss | boolean | true | parse CSS styles <style lang='windify'> and process directives like @apply | | preflight | boolean | true | enables CSS reset for descendants of the root element | | root | HTMLElement | document.body | the DOM element that will be scanned for windi classes | | watch | boolean | true | enable/disable watch mode, only applies to the root element and its children | | windiCssVersion | string | 'latest' | Windi CSS version that is used internally to parse and generate CSS | | config | object | | optional windicss config |

All configuration properties are optional, choose the defaults you like:

windify({
  minify: false,
  parseCss: false,
  preflight: false,
  root: document.querySelector('#root'),
  watch: false,
  windiCssVersion: '3.4.3',
  config: {
    ...
  }
});
