Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Webpack express generator

Webpack good practice for Express project

Build status

npm npm Build status

Why good but not best?

Nothing is perfect, including this package. It only offers "good" options for the most common cases while developing with Webpack.

You may have heard about buil tools like Vite, rollup or some frameworks like Nestjs, Nextjs, etc. They generate boilerplate but particularly for backend or frontend only. Sometimes you want a mono project that contains both, you can try this package.

Installation

npm i -g webpack-express-generator
# or
yarn global add webpack-express-generator

How to use?

Quick generate your app:

we-create your-app

Run the app:

npm start
# or
yarn start

Other options:

Usage: we-create <project-name> [options]

Options:
  -v, --version output the version number
  --eslint <rule>    eslint config support:
                     recommended: eslint recommendation,
                     pk: my recommendation for eslint
  --style <type> stylesheet support (css|sass|scss|less|styl) (default: "css")
  --view <engine> view engine support (pug|ejs|hbs) (default: "pug")
  --resolver <type> node module resolver (commonjs|module) (default: "commonjs")
  --babel            babel support
  -f, --force force on non-empty directory
  -h, --help display help for command

Additional infomations

  • To avoid polluting server's console, I set webpack-dev-middleware to log only if there is any error or warning. To see what webpack does, change stats to normal
devMiddleware(compiler, {
  publicPath: config.output.publicPath,
  serverSideRender: true,
  stats: 'normal', // change it
  writeToDisk: false,
})
  • To get the assets corresponding to the view, pass the entry name defined in webpack to getAssets middleware.
router.get('/', getAssets('asset'), (req, res, next) => {

  const assets = res.locals.assets;
  // do other things
})
  • Tip: webpack-dev-middleware will suspend all requests until the building progress is finished. To ignore requests which don't require any asset, you may follow below instruction:
const webpackBuilder = require('../middlewares/webpack-builder');

app.use('/api', apiRoutes);
// use webpackBuilder at a seperate path
app.use('/', webpackBuilder, otherRoutes);
