Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Webguide

Dependencies

Webguide has just one dependency and it's jQuery. It's used to animate showing and hiding of elements as well as pop-up windows.

Installation

You can acquire local copy to your project from:

  1. The github repository from this link
  2. Using npm npm install webguide

Setup & Start

After the download of the source, you need to link the library file to your page. The library has three main parts

  • Firstly, you need to select chosen HTML element you want to include by adding custom-data-attribute so the library knows exactly which elements it should consider. It may look like this:

     <button id="example" data-guide="true">Example button</button>
  • Secondly, you should select the order of elements, so the program knows which element is first, which is second etc. This is made by custom-data as well. Let's use our button again and set the element second in the sequence to be shown. It's gonna look like this:

     <button id="example" data-guide="true" data-guide-step="2">Example button</button>
  • The last part is to initialize guide in TypeScript file with an input array of chosen messages, it may look like this:

     let messages=[ “this is my first message“ , “second one“ , ... , “this will be end of the guide“ ];
     webGuide(messages);

    Optional

    You can add position of pop-up windows as well if you want to, or the layout of your page requires that. The position of pop-up window is set to be under the HTML element by default, but you can easily change that simply by adding position attribute to your element. The “position“ can be “L“ , “R“ and “U“ (left,right and up, down is set by default). It my look like this:

     <button id="example" data-guide="true" data-guide-step="2" data-guide-position="R">Example button</button>

    Now you should be completely ready to go and use this library.
