Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

VoiDB

VoiDB is a NoSQL NodeJS library that aims to replace SQL services such as MySQL and PostgreSQL in some use cases. This project was created to quickly provide a lightweight solution to data storage for smaller projects and is not meant to be used on large-scale applications. The project saves all the data given to it in JSON files. It comes with a language similar to SQL that can be used to easily retrieve, add and manipulate data to the database.

Installation

Now available for direct installation as a module. A REPL has been made and included in this repo for use.

Usage

VoiDB is a simple language that is written in a more human and readable format. The syntax is simple to use, and the details are given below. Note that the language comes with words such as 'called' that are optional and are removed automatically while processing anyway. They are merely there to improve the readability of the language.

const voidb = require('voidb');

Creating a new database

create new database "TestingAfterYears";

Setting active database

use "TestingAfterYears";

Please note that setting a new active database updates internal storage. Therefore, one must run this command first, and then run the following commands separately in a new run.

Creating a new table

create new table "students" with columns "[{'name':'string'}, {'username':'string primarykey'}, {'pword':'password'}]" and values "[['Anirudh M', 'F2024A7PS0020H', 'testing1234'], ['Harshul Aggarwal', 'F2024A7PS0010', 'roommateperks'], ['Kaustubh Ghate', 'F2024B1PS1071', 'bastarddidntfreezecampus']]" and defaultvalues "[['Anirudh M', 'F2024A7PS0020H', 'testing1234']]";

Note that defaultvalues are optional. We can use the default command to revert the table to the default values.

default "students";

Also, note that passwords are automatically hashed and salted by the system. Therefore, a special command is needed in order to validate user credentials.

validate username "username" "F2024B1PS1071" password "pword" "bastarddidntfreezecampus" table "students";

Displaying table data

select table "students" columns "['pword','name', 'username']" where "name === 'Anirudh M' || username === 'F2024B1PS1071'" order by "username desc";

Of course, order by and where are both optional clauses. Note that you don't need to put column names in quotes in the where and order by clauses. Also note that instead of select, one can also use the keyword 'read'.

Truncating and Deleting

truncate "students";
delete "students";
delete database "TestingAfterYears";

Truncate removes all values in the table, and delete deletes the entire table

Inserting into Table

insert "[['Aditya Sundar, 'F2024B1PS0100H', 'havingfuninlife']]" into "students" columns "*";

Encrypting Tables/Databases

encrypt table "students" "pass123";
encrypt database "TestingAfterYears" "pass1234";

This command encrypts all the data saved in the named table or encrypts all the tables in the named database (all with the same given password). From that point on, the data is never stored in the storage unencrypted. To access or modify data in any encrypted table, the -p modifier has to be used.

select table "students" columns "['pword','name', 'username']" where "name === 'Anirudh M' || username === 'F2024B1PS1071'" order by "username desc" -p "pass123";
insert "[['Aditya Sundar, 'F2024B1PS0100H', 'havingfuninlife']]" into "students" columns "*" -p "pass123";

Note that a table cannot be permanently saved as decrypted once it has been encrypted for security reasons.

Uploading Table JSON file into a database manually

create table -d "{file path here}.json";

Assuming that the JSON file given is of valid format, the table is uploaded to the database currently being used and will be accessible through the other commands.

Detailed tutorials and documentation will be made available soon.
