Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Viewscreen component for mermaid.

Contents

What is this?

This library can run inside an <iframe>, with some skeleton HTML. Then, from the outside, you can embed that frame, and send messages to it, to display a mermaid diagram.

This behavior is specific to github.com that works in comments and files. Using <iframe>s is a way to create components agnostic to a framework: you can use this with plain JavaScript or with React, for example.

This library is part of a monorepo rehype-github. See its readme for more info.

When should I use this?

You can use this library when you want to match how github.com works or when you want to build similar pipelines.

This library is useful if you want to user content to include mermaid diagrams.

Install

This package is ESM only. In browsers with esm.sh:

<script type="module">
  import {viewscreenMermaid} from 'https://esm.sh/viewscreen-mermaid@1?bundle'
</script>

Use

Say our file viewscreen-mermaid.html looks as follows:

<!doctype html>
<html lang=en>
<meta content=width=device-width,initial-scale=1 name=viewport>
<meta charset=utf8>
<title>viewscreen: mermaid</title>
<style>/* … */</style>
<script type=module>
  import {viewscreenMermaid} from 'https://esm.sh/viewscreen-mermaid@1?bundle'

  const id = window.location.hash.slice(1)
  if (!id) throw new Error('Expected `id` in hash')
  const parent = window.parent
  if (!parent) throw new Error('Expected parent window')

  const viewer = create(document.body, {
    onSizeSuggestion(width, height) {
      parent.postMessage({id, type: 'resize', value: {height, width}})
    }
  })

  window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {
    if (event.data.type === 'content') {
      viewer.change(event.data.value)
    }
  })
</script>

…and a file index.html looks as follows:

<!doctype html>
<html lang=en>
<meta charset=utf8>
<meta content=width=device-width,initial-scale=1 name=viewport>
<title>example</title>
<link rel=stylesheet href=https://esm.sh/github-markdown-css@5/github-markdown.css>
<style>/* … */</style>
<div class=markdown-body>
<pre><code class=language-mermaid>graph TD;
A--&gt;B;
</code></pre>
</div>
<script type=module>
  const types = {mermaid: '/viewscreen-mermaid.html'}

  /**
   * Handle a message from any viewscreen iframe.
   */
  window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {
    if (event.data.type === 'resize') {
      // We use unique names, but not bad to handle arrays.
      const nodes = document.getElementsByName(event.data.id)

      for (const node of nodes) {
        node.setAttribute('style', `height:${event.data.value.height}px`)
      }
    }
  })

  const nodes = Array.from(document.body.querySelectorAll('code'))
  const prefix = 'language-'

  for (const node of nodes) {
    /** @type {string | undefined} */
    let name

    for (const className of node.classList) {
      if (className.startsWith(prefix)) {
        name = className.slice(prefix.length)
        break
      }
    }

    if (!name) continue

    const specifier = Object.hasOwn(types, name) ? types[name] : undefined

    if (!specifier) continue

    const value = node.textContent || ''
    const id = crypto.randomUUID()
    const url = new URL(specifier, window.location.href)
    url.hash = id
    const iframe = document.createElement('iframe')

    iframe.classList.add('render-viewer')
    iframe.setAttribute('role', 'presentation')
    iframe.setAttribute('name', id)
    iframe.setAttribute('src', String(url))
    iframe.setAttribute('style', 'opacity:0')

    iframe.addEventListener('load', function () {
      const otherWindow = iframe.contentWindow
      if (!otherWindow) throw new Error('Expected `contentWindow`')
      const message = {id, type: 'content', value}
      iframe.setAttribute('style', '')
      otherWindow.postMessage(message)
    })

    const scope =
      node.parentElement && node.parentElement.nodeName === 'PRE'
        ? node.parentElement
        : node
    scope.replaceWith(iframe)
  }
</script>

…now assuming both run on a server localhost:8000, opening that in a browser shows the diagram!

API

This package exports the identifier viewscreenMermaid. There is no default export.

viewscreenMermaid(node, options?)

Render a mermaid graph in node.

Parameters
  • node (HTMLElement, required) — node to work in
  • options (Options, optional) — configuration
Returns

Object with the following fields:

  • change ((value: string) => Promise<undefined>) — change the diagram

OnSizeSuggestion

Callback called when there’s a new size suggestion for the viewscreen (TypeScript type).

Parameters
  • width (number) — current width
  • height (number) — preferred height for width
Returns

Nothing (undefined).

Options

Configuration (TypeScript type).

Fields
  • onSizeSuggestion (OnSizeSuggestion, optional) — callback called on a size suggestion

Bugs

GitHubs behavior for this is pretty good! It doesn’t support zooming, panning, or dark mode, but those are included in this library.

Authoring

See the mermaid docs for more on how to author diagrams.

HTML

The markup injected into node looks like this:

<div> <!-- Zoomable/panable area -->
  <div> <!-- Translated area -->
    <svg></svg> <!-- Mermaid diagram -->
  </div>
</div>
<div class="panel">
  <button class="zoom-in"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Zoom in, with octicon -->
  <button class="zoom-out"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Zoom out, with octicon -->
  <button class="reset"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Reset zoom/pan, with octicon -->
  <button class="up"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Move up, with octicon -->
  <button class="down"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Move down, with octicon -->
  <button class="left"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Move left, with octicon -->
  <button class="right"><svg></svg></button> <!-- Move right, with octicon -->
</div>
