Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

alt text Video Lightning Build Status Pinkie Pie Approval Status

Turn any element into a lightbox or popover link for Youtube and Vimeo videos.

Repo name is for posterity, Video Lightning is standalone so jQuery is optional.

Table of Contents

Why?

Lots of reasons. The main one, and the reason we built it, is for quick video explainers in the appropriate places. This little plugin bootstraps getting those helpful little videos in place.

How?

Simple. Add the js your project, initialize with target and options and enjoy your video lightbox enhanced element!

Features

  • Simple access to all embed API options for both providers
  • Lots of options to customize and beautify your lightboxes
  • Intelligent popover auto positioning gravitates to page center
  • Preview videos on hover, pin if you want them to stick around
  • Lazy loading of videos prevents slow page load due to video embeds
  • Rick Roll with ease (don't pass video id, add rick_roll option to prevent closing)

Demos

Check the GH Project Page for demos.

Docs

Getting Started

i. Add script where you desire (bottom of body is recommended)

<script src="javascripts/jquery-video-lightning.js"></script>

ii. Initialize it on the desired elements with any options you please (options can also be passed as data attributes)

Native initialization:

<script>
  videoLightning({
    elements: [
      {
        ".video-link": {
          id: "y-PKffm2uI4dk",
          autoplay: true,
          color: "white"
        }
      }
    ]
  });
</script>

jQuery flavored initialization:

<script>
  $(function() {
    $(".video-link").jqueryVideoLightning({
        id: "y-PKffm2uI4dk",
        autoplay: true,
        color: "white"
    });
  });
</script>

Alternatively, for a simple setup you could initialize on a class, set your options globally, and add video id to each el.

<div class="video-link" data-video-id="y-PKffm2uI4dk"></div>
<div class="video-link" data-video-id="y-z-D1PJ1cMXs></div>
<script>
 videoLightning({settings: {autoplay: true, color: "white"}, element: ".video-link"});
</script>

Passing in Options

Options can be passed in any of the following three ways.

Options as attributes off the element object (local to element):

videoLightning({
  elements: [
    {
      ".video-link": {
        id: "y-PKffm2uI4dk",
        width: 1280,
        height: 720
      }
    }
  ]
});

Options as attributes of the setting object (global, overwritten by local, doesn't apply to jQuery style init):

videoLightning({
  settings: {
    autoplay: true,
    width: 1280,
    height: 720
  },
  elements: [
    {
      ".video-link": {
        id: "y-PKffm2uI4dk"
      }
    }
  ]
});

Options as data attributes:

(Note that data attributes are all prefixed with data-video and camel cased options should be dashed instead in data attributes. So startTime becomes data-video-start-time)

IE<10 does not support dataset and as such the only backported settings that work with older IE versions are id, width, and height

<div class="video-link" data-video-id="y-PKffm2uI4dk" data-video-width="1280" data-video-height="720"></div>
