Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

vercel-python-gis

A vercel python runtime that has GEOS, PROJ and GDAL installed so you can use the geospatial libraries of Django in vercel.

Usage with django

with a directory structure like this

api/
  index.py
config/
  settings.py
  ...
core/
  models.py
  ...
vercel.json

in /vercel.json add this runtime

{
  "routes": [
    {
      "src": "/(.*)",
      "dest": "api/index.py"
    }
  ],
  "functions": {
    "api/index.py": {
      "runtime": "[email protected]",
      // "runtime": "git+https://github.com/jperelli/vercel-python-gis.git#[email protected]" // for dev only
    }
  }
}

In /config/settings.py add

DATABASES = {
  'default': {
    'ENGINE': 'django.contrib.gis.db.backends.postgis',
    ...
  }
}

# IMPORTANT
GDAL_LIBRARY_PATH = "libgdal.so"
GEOS_LIBRARY_PATH = "libgeos_c.so.1"

Now in /core/models.py you can use gis models

from django.contrib.gis.db import models
...
class MyModel(models.Model):
  ...
  geom = models.PolygonField()
  ...

And in /core/views.py you can use gis functions

from django.contrib.gis.geos import Point
...
def my_view(request):
  p = Point(0, 0)
  ...
  return HttpResponse(p.wkt)

In /api/index.py

import os
from django.core.wsgi import get_wsgi_application
os.environ.setdefault("DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE", "config.settings")
app = get_wsgi_application()

Develop vercel-python-gis.

Build instructions

spin up the container with docker compose

docker-compose run --entrypoint='' builder bash

run the repo-build.sh inside the container

you should now have a /temp/stripped-files folder

copy /temp/stripped-files to /dist/files

If you are changing code

Code is copied from @vercel/python runtime, that lives here https://github.com/vercel/vercel/tree/main/packages/python, it's almost the same code. I'm trying to see if I can delete all that code from here and just use the @vercel/python, or inherit from it somehow.

If you are updating code in /src/*, you need to run npm run build before pushing the repo.
