Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Demo | Developer Guide | Roadmap | Known Issues

Features include:

  • Document index pane
  • Stow index pane on mobile devices
  • Automatically generate anchor links (optional)

Usage

Include the <script> in your markup:

<script
  type="module"
  src="https://www.unpkg.com/[email protected]/vellum-doc.js"></script>

Or, if you host the script as part of your project (recommended):

<script type="module">
  import 'vellum-doc/vellum-doc.js'
</script>

Example:

<vellum-doc>
  <h1>Commodi</h1>
  <p>
    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. Id omnis amet sit autem voluptas et dicta
    consequatur ut amet rerum ad consequatur nemo ea necessitatibus enim. Aut
    velit accusantium qui molestiae beatae ad sunt odit sit recusandae sapiente
    id tempora mollitia nam praesentium laborum rem molestiae placeat.
  </p>
  <h2>Et nobis reprehenderit quo minus iste sit dolore ipsam!</h2>
  <p>
    Ut quam odio et quae unde ut sunt quas qui unde cupiditate? 33 sequi
    molestiae quo autem vitae ut itaque nisi aut quod esse qui quibusdam labore
    ut voluptatibus sequi sit sapiente galisum. Nam facilis aspernatur et eius
    perspiciatis eum eveniet omnis aut repudiandae rerum ut sunt assumenda?
  </p>
</vellum-doc>

Works best with smooth scrolling enabled:

html {
  scroll-behavior: smooth;
}

Anchors

Anchor links can be dynamically added to document headers using the anchors attribute:

<vellum-doc anchors>
  <h1>Commodi</h1>
</vellum-doc>

Styling

<vellum-doc> exposes CSS custom properties and shadow parts that can be used to style the document index.

Supports the following CSS variables:

| Variable | Description | Default | | --------------- | --------------------------- | ------- | | --index-width | Width of the index sidebar. | 300px |

Supports the following shadow parts:

| Part | Description | | ---------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | index | The index pane container. Can be used to set padding, style the index divider (border-right), etc. | | index-h1 | h1 items in the index. | | index-h2 | As above, but for h1 items. | | index-h3 | As above, but for h3 items. | | index-h4 | As above, but for h4 items. |

For example:

vellum-doc {
  --index-width: 250px;
}

vellum-doc::part(index) {
  border-right: dashed red;
  padding-left: 10px;
  padding-right: 10px;
}

vellum-doc::part(index-h1) {
  color: red;
}
