Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Util BCV Currency Checker

Utility to get the currency values like usd in bolivars which presents an alternative to visiting the central bank of venezuela web just for getting the USD dollar value (which is the most commonly use case of the page honestly). Additionally allows to get the usd buy/sell values per bank (supported ones which can be seen below)

This kind of strategy allows to get the value directly without entering the page constantly only to get currency values like the dollar or euro and, in fact, using this value with commercial transactions or as a service to update product commercial values based on the dollar value

How it works?

The scrapping method is done using Cheerio and the html tag id/tag name disposed on the source pages:

  • Getting EUR/USD/YEN etc: the page actually uses a <div id="<currency>"> tag to store every currency to their respective name, which allows to get the concrete element and sanitize it.

  • Getting bank usd buy/sell values: BCV page has a table with the bank list and each buy/sell values for usd, so, basically the only thing to do is getting the <tbody> tag of the table and iterate per row. NOTE: this method only supports the actual prices, not the past ones

Install

npm install util-bcv-currency

Usage

To get a currency value from currencies table

await getCurrencyTableProperty(CurrencyKinds.{SupportedCurrency}).then((data) => {console.log(data)})

To get usd value from banks table

await getBankUsdCurrencyPrices(SupportedBanks.{SupportedBank}).then((data) => {console.log(data)})

Supported Currencies

enum CurrencyKinds {
	usd = "dolar",
	rub = "rublo",
	try = "lira",
	eur = "euro",
	yen = "yuan",
}

Supported Banks

enum SupportedBanks {
	bnc = "Banco Nacional de Crédito BNC",
	bbva = "BBVA Provincial",
	other = "Otras Instituciones",
	merca = "Banco Mercantil",
	exter = "Banco Exterior",
	banes = "Banesco",
}

Examples

// Get yen value in bolivars
const yenPrice = await getCurrencyTableProperty(CurrencyKinds.yen).then((val) => val)
console.log(yenPrice)
// Get usd buy and sell values from BBVA Provincial bank
const BBVAUSD = getBankUsdCurrencyPrices(SupportedBanks.bbva).then((curval) => curval)
console.log(BBVAUSD)
