Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

use-stripe-subscription

use-stripe-subscription makes it easy to add Stripe Billing to a React application. It extends Stripe's SDK with a standardized React SDK for familiar-feeling hooks and components.

Demo

A demo of use-stripe-subscription in a Next.js project is available here.

Stripe Product & Price modeling

use-stripe-subscription relies on Stripe's Product and Price objects to manage subscriptions. Currently, the package only allows customers to subscribe to one Product at a time.

Developers should treat "Products" as tiers (e.g. Free, Pro, Business), while "Prices" are different ways to pay for a Product (e.g. Monthly, Annually). These can be configured directly from the Products page of the Stripe Dashboard

After Products and Prices are configured, developers should configure their Customer portal settings. The settings here are how use-stripe-subscription determines which Products and Prices users can purchase in a self-serve manner. For security reasons, useSubscription() only returns products that are listed in the "Products" section of this page.

Developers can optionally add metadata to a Product that describes which "features" come with a subscription. Simply use a metadata key named features, and assign the value to a comma separated list of arbitrary features (no spaces, e.g. readFoo,writeBar). Then, the <Gate feature="readFoo"> (React) and customerHasFeature({customerId, feature: "writeBar"}) (Node) can be used to gate access to the application as needed.

Reference

useSubscription()

useSubscription() is a hook that returns:

  • products - A list of available products and their available pricing plans in tuple form {product, prices}

  • subscription - The active subscription

  • redirectToCheckout() - A method to initialize and redirect the current customer to a Checkout session. It is used for purchasing a new subscription. Arguments:

    • price - The ID of one of the Price objects associated with the Product. Use the products list to find a Price ID.
    • successUrl - URL where the customer is forwarded if successful. Returns back by default.
    • cancelUrl - URL where the customer is forwarded if unsuccessful. Returns back by default.
  • redirectToCustomerPortal() - A method to initialize and redirect the current customer to a Customer Portal session. It is used for managing an existing subscription. Arguments:

    • returnUrl - URL where the customer is sent when they choose to leave the Customer Portal. Returns back by default.

Demo implementation

<Gate> is a component used to gate content based on the active subscription. It can gate based on the active product ID, or based the features that the active product makes available. The available props are:

  • children - the React children to render if the condition passes
  • unsubscribed - render children if the customer does not have any subscription
  • product - render children if the customer is subscribed to the passed product
  • feature - render children if the string passed is contained in the features key of the Stripe Product's metadata. The features key should contain a comma-separated list of features that come with the product.
  • negate - add this prop to render children in the opposite scenario from normal

Demo implementation

A wrapper component that must be mounted at the top of the React tree to provide context to useSubscription() and <Gate>. Props:

  • stripePublishableKey - Pass the Stripe Publishable Key here. Required if redirectToCheckout() or redirectToCustomerPortal() are used.
  • endpoint - The endpoint where subscriptionHandler() is running (see below). Defaults to /api/subscription

Demo implementation

customerHasFeature()

This function is used on the server to determine if the product the customer is subscribed to contains a given feature. The feature must be listed in the Stripe Product's metadata under the features key as a comma-separated list. Arguments:

  • customerId - the Stripe Customer ID associated with the request
  • feature - the feature to check

Demo implementation

subscriptionHandler()

This function is "mounted" on the application's server to communicate with the useSubscription() hook. We suggest mounting it on /api/subscription, but the location can be configured via <SubscriptionProvider>.

The return value of subscriptionHandler should be passed directly into the HTTP Response body. Arguments:

  • customerId - The developer is responsible for determining the Stripe Customer ID associated with an inbound request.
  • body - The HTTP Request's body, already parsed into a dictionary of key-values
  • query - The HTTP Request's query string, already parsed into a dictionary of key-values

Demo implementation

Environment variable configuration

customerHasFeature() and subscriptionHandler() expect for an environment to be set with the Stripe Secret Key. It must be accessible through process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY.

Sponsor

This project is built and sponsored by Clerk, a Customer Identity Platform that takes a React-first approach to authentication and customer management.

Although the package is built by Clerk, there is no requirement to use Clerk. subscriptionHandler() simply accepts any Stripe Customer ID. It is not opinionated about how the ID is determined.
