Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ts-valid-mongodb

Thin layer over mongodb native driver to support strongly typed models leveraging the power of zod schema library

Instalation

From npm

npm install ts-valid-mongodb

Requirements

  • TypeScript 4.5+!
  • You must enable strict mode in your tsconfig.json. This is a best practice for all TypeScript projects.
// tsconfig.json
{
  // ...
  "compilerOptions": {
    // ...
    "strict": true
  }
}

Basic Usage

import { z } from 'zod'
import { randomUUID } from 'crypto'
import TsValidMongoDb, { Schema } from 'ts-valid-mongodb'

const reservationSchema = z.object({
  id: z.string().uuid(),
  onBehalf: z.string(),
  access: z.enum(['VIP', 'NORMAL']),
  accepted: z.boolean(),
  seats: z.number(),
  groupNames: z.array(z.string()),
  createdAt: z.date(),
})

async function run() {
  const client = TsValidMongoDb.create('mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017', 'test')
  await client.connect()
  const reservationsModel = client.createModel(new Schema('reservation', reservationSchema))

  await reservationsModel.insert({
    id: randomUUID(),
    onBehalf: 'Jhon',
    accepted: true,
    access: 'NORMAL',
    seats: 6,
    groupNames: ['Pedrito', 'Juanito'],
    createdAt: new Date(),
  })

  const found = await reservationsModel.find({ onBehalf: 'Jhon' })
  console.log({ found })

  await client.disconnect()
}

run().catch(console.error)

Motivation

When working with mongodb on nodejs usually we tend to use mongoose has an ODM abstraction that guarantees type safety on storing, updating an querying our documents on the DB.

A common problem when using Mongoose with TypeScript is that you have to define both the Mongoose model and the TypeScript interface. If the model changes, you also have to keep the TypeScript interface file in sync or the TypeScript interface would not represent the real data structure of the model. If you try to make strong bindings over models and interfaces mongoose complex type definitions will make your editor go slow or break compilation on complex cases.

Other alternatives as typegoose or type-mongodb make heavy use of @decorators in order to achieve the same goal, but has complex workflows, known issue, or bad support.

Because of these drawbacks of mongoose and other alternatives ts-valid-mongodb is born.
