Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

tinypng-loader

PNG is useful because it's the only widely supported format that can store partially transparent images. When app moves to production stage, image compression is essential. However, according to my experience using such as gulp-image, imagemin-webpack, most of them relied on optipng plugin. This compression algorithm only help reduce around 5%-10%. tinypng.com uses smart lossy compression techniques to reduce the file size of PNG/JP(E)G files with around 60%-70% file size reduction.

Here is a command line way if you just want to quickly use it without any coding.

Advantage

By compare to other tinypng library, this library use a tinypng "loophole" API to compress images. Support popular build tools gulp and webpack so that developers can easily used this in and only in Production stage (Since this library rely on tinypng web api which require network accesss)

Compatible Image

  • PNG
  • JP(E)G

Get Started

npm install tinypng-loader --save-dev

Support

  • Webpack
  • Gulp

Language

  • Typescript
  • Javascript

Example

Gulp

Added maxConcurrency as an option. By default its value is 10. ** WARNING: due to the limit from tinypng.com, please keep this value under 20.**

    var gulp = require('gulp');
    var gulpTinyPng = require('tinypng-loader/gulp/index');
    gulp.task('tinypng', function(cb) {
        gulp.src('test/img/**/*.png')
            .pipe(gulpTinyPng({maxConcurrency: 10}))
            .pipe(gulp.dest('test/dist'))
            .on('end', cb);
    });

Webpack

    ...
    module:{
        ... //webpack loader starts from here
        {
           test: /\.png$/,
           loader: 'file!tinypng'
        },
        ... //end of webpack loader
    }

chain loaders 时,可以在 options 中设置指定需要加工的匹配即可:

    ...
    {
        test: [/\.bmp$/, /\.gif$/, /\.jpe?g$/, /\.png$/],
        use: [
            {
                loader: require.resolve('url-loader'),
                options: {
                    limit: 10000,
                    name: 'static/media/[name].[hash:8].[ext]',
                }
            },
            {
                loader: require.resolve('tinypng-loader'),
                options: {
                    test: /\.png$/
                },
            }
        ]
    }
    ...
