Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Tigerlily

Create an object that preserves its data across page loads!

  1. Update your object's data
  2. All the data is mirrored to localStorage
  3. Reload the page and the data is the same!

Comes with an event emitter, so you can listen for changes to your object!

Demo

See It in Action

Install

npm install tigerlily

How to Use

import tigerlily from "tigerlily";

// init with unique key, so you can have multiple instances
const persistentObject = tigerlily('jMpHXDYguqtS', {
  // preload data with defaults
  // these will never override existing data
  defaults: {
    someArray: [],
    someData: {
      name: "James"
    }
  }
});

// 1. define a property
persistentObject.message = "hello, world!";

// 2. reload the page
window.location.reload();

// 3. the properties value is preserved 😯✅
persistentObject.message === "hello, world!"; // true

How it Works

tigerlily

const persistentObject = tigerlily('jMpHXDYguqtS');

Define an object that will survive new page loads.

Pass in a unique string to initialize it, so you can have multiple instances on the same page. If you don't pass in a unique string, you'll just be able to have a single instance.

Has support for storing dates. 📅

on

// listen for changes to all properties
tigerlily.on("*", ({prop, path, oldValue, value}) => {
  console.log("listening to '*'", {prop, path, oldValue, value});
});

// listen for changes to the "message" prop
tigerlily.on("message", ({prop, path, oldValue, value}) => {
  console.log("listening to 'message'", {prop, path, oldValue, value});
});

// listen for changes to the "username" prop nested on an object that's inside the "profile" prop
tigerlily.on("profile.username", ({prop, path, oldValue, value}) => {
  console.log("listening to 'profile.username'", {prop, path, oldValue, value});
});

Listen for changes to your object's properties. You can listen to changes to nested properties by adding a period (i.e. .) between each property name.

Note: Both oldValue and value are passed as deep copies of their values instead of by reference (if they're objects or arrays). This makes it easier to compare them.
