Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Documentation

Rules

  • The first theme of the array "themes" defines the default theme.
  • Obviously only two themes can be defined, hence the word "Binary" in the name lol.

Attributes | Type | Required |Description | Error -----------|------|----------|------------|------ themes | JSONArray of Strings | Yes | The two themes to define | If more than two themes defined or themes attribute undefined verbose | bool | No | Logs to console information about the state of the component | None data-theme | String | No | Added after the component is rendered | None

JavaScript interface

A.K.A the instance properties

This can be used programmatically, you can control it with javascript

Property | Type | Description ---------|------| ----------- verbose | bool | Logs to console information about the state of the component currenState | number | The currentState of the state machine currentTheme | String | The theme that is currently applied

Do not use any of the methods like prepareTheme(), transition(), otherwise the component can be set to a wrong state, to make state changes with javascript use the click() method

CSS variables

The variables are defined on the host element, these are the default values

theme-switcher {
  --switch-color: black;
  --switch-width: 60px;
  --switch-height: 34px;
  --switch-radius: 34px;
  --slider-width: 25px;
  --slider-height: 25px;
  --slider-margin: 4px 2px 0px 5px;
  --slider-transition: .4s;
  --slider-radius: 50%;
  --slider-cursor: pointer;
  --slider-color: white;
  --slider-translatex-unswitched: translateX(0px);
  --slider-translatex-switched: translateX(26px);
}

What the component does

Adds and updates the data attribute "data-theme" to the body element which can be used in CSS to react when the value changes with attribute selectors.

Every time the theme changes gets set to local storage.

It handles the state via a super simple state machine inspired by this article.
