Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Icon SVG Inline Loader

A webpack loader that enables inlining Material Design SVGs, Ionicon SVGs, Iconic SVGs, or any SVG file into HTML.

Install

npm install --save-dev svg-icon-inline-loader

Usage

Webpack Configuration

{
  test: /\.html$/,
  loader: 'svg-icon-inline'
},

Or with html-loader:

{
  test: /\.html$/,
  loader: 'html!svg-icon-inline'
},

Within HTML

This loader recognizes 3 types of self-closing tags:

  1. <mat-svg/> - Inline a Material Design SVG
  2. <ion-svg/> - Inline an Ionicon SVG
  3. <iconic-svg/> - Inline an Iconic SVG
  4. <file-svg/> - Inline an SVG file.

Inline a Material Design SVG

<mat-svg category="navigation" name="fullscreen_exit"/>
  • category: The category that Material Design specifies for that icon.
  • name: The name of the icon. If the name is multi-word, it must be separated using underscores.

Inline an Ionicon SVG

<ion-svg name="ion-arrow-expand"/>
  • name: The name of the icon. If the name is multi-word, it must be separated using hyphens.

Inline an Iconic SVG

<iconic-svg name="account-login"/>
  • name: The name of the icon. If the name is multi-word, it must be separated using hyphens.

Inline an SVG File

<file-svg src="./icons/home.svg"/>
  • src: The path of the svg file.

Features

Retained Attributes

Any attributes apart from category, name, or src, are retained. For example:

Input

<mat-svg v-if="displayHomeIcon" class="icon-home" category="action" name="home"/>

Output

<svg role="presentation" focusable="false" v-if="displayHomeIcon" class="icon-home" fill="#000000" height="24" viewBox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
  <path d="M10 20v-6h4v6h5v-8h3L12 3 2 12h3v8z"></path>
  <path d="M0 0h24v24H0z" fill="none"></path>
</svg>

Accessibility Improvements

A11y modifications for SVGs as recommended.

  • Add role="presentation" and focusable="false" attributes.
  • Remove desc and title attributes.

SVG Optimization

SVGO is used to optimize SVGs.
