Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Stanford Named Entity Recognizer (NER) wrapper for Node.js

This project is a simple wrapper around the Stanford NER Library

This project is written in TypeScript Version 1.8.10

It is highly recommended that you use Visual Studio Code because then you will get code completion and other goodies when you use this library from TypeScript.

Installation

This library spawns a Java process so your system needs to have Java.

With Java installed, you should also have Java as part of your path:

$ java -version
java version "1.8.0_91"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_91-b14)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.91-b14, mixed mode)

The version of Java is important otherwise this may not work

Naturally, you need Node.js as well.

$ node -v
v4.4.7

It is highly recommended that you install TypeScript as well, though you can use this library from pure Javascript as well.

$ npm install typescript -g
$ tsc -v
Version 1.8.10

Also you need to install the typings tool

npm install typings -g

Updating the Stanford NER library

For the sake of simplicity, I have bundled stanford-ner-2015-12-09, but you can use a later version by specifying the (absolute) path in the options.

Sample project setup (TypeScript)

$ mkdir ner-sample

$ npm init
$ typings init
$ tsc --init
$ npm install stanford-ner --save
$ typings install dt~node --global --save

Edit tsconfig.js to target es6 instead of es5

Then compile by running tsc

$ tsc

This transpiles the TypeScript code to ES6 Javascript. So, next run the JavaScript file generated:
