Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Sass/Less Material Color Palettes

This color palette comprises primary and accent colors that can be used for illustration or to develop your brand colors. They’ve been designed to work harmoniously with each other. The color palette starts with primary colors and fills in the spectrum to create a complete and usable palette for Android, Web, and iOS. Google suggests using the 500 colors as the primary colors in your app and the other colors as accents colors.

From material.io.

Google's Material Design color palettes, for Sass/SCSS and Less.

Sass

For Sass/SCSS projects, include _google-material-colors.scss high in your project's cascade (the Settings or Tools level if you follow ITCSS for project management). The palettes are stored in a nested map, and are accessible through the custom material-color function.

To get the desired color, pass the name and (optionally) the tone into the function. Colors have the same names given on the Material Design website, with hyphenation instead of spaces where relevant. The tone argument is optional, and will default to 500 if not specified.

Example:

.block {
    background-color: material-color(deep-purple);
    color: material-color(grey, 100);
}

Output:

.block { background-color: #673ab7; color: #f5f5f5; }

Less

For Less projects, including google-material-colors.less in your project will add the entire palette to the global scope. If you don't want the entire palette in your scope, individual color palettes can be specified by including their respective files (e.g. to use the red palette alone, include google-material-colors.red.less). Variables follow a @material-[color]-[tone] namespace, with the option to drop [tone] and default to 500.

Example:

.block {
    background-color: @material-deep-purple;
    color: @material-grey-100;
}

Output:

.block { background-color: #673ab7; color: #f5f5f5 }
