Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

rxjs-sub-manager (rxjs subscription manager)

💻 Description

This lib aims to:

  • Manage observable rxjs subscriptions simply and consistently.
  • Avoid memory leaks.
  • Avoid the need to unsubscribe manually.

🪟 Preview example

📦 Installation

$ npm install rxjs-sub-manager
or
$ yarn add rxjs-sub-manager

🚀 Usage

  • the examples were made using angular, however the library is agnostic of any framework it just depends on rxjs to work.

1. Import the lib

import { SubscriptionManager } from 'rxjs-sub-manager';

2. Create a subscription manager instance

export class ParentComponent {
    private readonly subscriptionManager = new SubscriptionManager<string>({
        prefixId: 'ParentComponent-',
    });
}

3. Subscribe to an observable

export class ParentComponent implments OnInit {
    // ...
    private readonly observable1$ = interval(1000);

    ngOnInit() {
        this.subscriptionManager.add({
            ref: 'observable1',
            sub: this.observable1$.subscribe((value) => {
                console.log(value);
            }),
        });
    }
}

4. Unsubscribe from an observable triggers

4.1. Unsubscribe from especific observable

this.subscriptionManager.close('observable1');

4.2. Unsubscribe from all observables

this.subscriptionManager.closeAll();

5. Unsubscribe from all observables when component is destroyed

export class ParentComponent implements OnInit, OnDestroy {
    // ...
    ngOnDestroy(): void {
        this.subscriptionManager.destroy();
    }
}

6. Check observables

this.subscriptionManager.hasActive('observable1'); // true
this.subscriptionManager.hasActive('observable2'); // false

this.subscriptionManager.activeSubs$; // Observable<Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>>;
this.subscriptionManager.activeSubsValue; // Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>;

this.subscriptionManager.closedSubs$; // Observable<Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>>;
this.subscriptionManager.closedSubsValue; // Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>;

this.subscriptionManager.allSubs$; // Observable<{
//    active: Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>;
//    closed: Map<string, SubscriptionManagerRef<string>[]>;
//}>

7. check instance ID

this.subscriptionManager.instanceId; // string

8. (Extra) check and control global public context

import { SubscriptionManagerPublicContext } from 'rxjs-sub-manager';
export class AppComponent implements OnInit {
    private readonly subscriptionManager = new SubscriptionManager({
        prefixId: 'AppComponent-',
    });
    public readonly rootSubsSize$ = new BehaviorSubject<number>(0); // <-- this is total
    // number of active subscriptions in the app global context
    ngOnInit(): void {
        const sub =
            SubscriptionManagerPublicContext.subscriptionManagerInstances.subscribe(
                (instances) => {
                    this.subscriptionManager.close('rootSubsSize$');
                    const sub = combineLatest(
                        Array.from(instances.values()).map((v) => v.activeSubs$)
                    )
                        .pipe(debounceTime(100))
                        .subscribe((v) => {
                            const size = v.reduce((acc, sm) => {
                                return acc + sm.size;
                            }, 0);
                            this.rootSubsSize$.next(size);
                        });
                    this.subscriptionManager.add({ ref: 'rootSubsSize$', sub });
                }
            );
        this.subscriptionManager.add({
            ref: 'subscriptionManagerInstances$',
            sub,
        });
    }
    ngOnDestroy(): void {
        this.subscriptionManager.destroy();
    }
}
