Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

RevealBox:

What is it?

Reveal box is a custom web component (inline-block element). It hides contents of a box with another box. When a user hovers over the box the top box will move out of the way so that the user can see the contents of the hidden box. The top box will move out of the way by the effects you assign to it. Currently there are nine effects and more will be added later.

How to use it?

It is quite easy to use it on your webpage. Just follow the below steps:

  1. Include the link to the script file that holds the this custom web component (reveal-box.js) near the bottom of the body section of your webpage. See below
    <script src="./revealbox.js"></script>
  1. Then use the custom element tags on your webpage.
    <reveal-box width="100px" height="50px" effect="flip-hort" style="background-color: Beige; border: 3px solid black;">
        <div slot="cover">
            <p>Cover Box</p>
        </div>
        <div slot="reveal">
            <p>Reveal</p>
        </div>
    </reveal-box>

Note: That is all you have to do to use this custom element. There is an example HTML page (acronym.html) that shows how to use it.

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html>
      <head>
        <title>Acronym Web Component</title>
        <script>
            function revealclick(){
                alert("click event has been triggered!!");
            }
        </script>
      </head>

      <body>

        <h1>This is the RevealBox web component</h1>

        <reveal-box width="100px" height="50px" effect="flip-hort" style="background-color: Beige; border: 3px solid black; onclick="revealclick">
            <div slot="cover">
                <p>Cover Box</p>
            </div>
            <div slot="reveal">
                <p>Reveal</p>
            </div>
        </reveal-box>

        <script src="./revealbox.js"></script>

      </body>

    </html>

There are only four properties that you can use to customize this element.

There are four attributes that you need to set:

  1. width - the width of the reveal box
  2. height - the height of the reveal box
  3. effect - the type of effect the box will have when a user hovers over it
  4. style - this allows you to style the look of the outer reveal box

There are two div elements that you need to include:

  1. div with the slot = "cover" will hold the html code for the cover box
  2. div with the slot = "reveal" will hold the html code for the reveal box

Note: a user can style these two div anyway you want but the width and height will be determine by the attribute set in the reveal-box tag

There are currently nine effects that can be used by this custom element when you hover over the reveal-box

  1. flip-hort: will rotate the top box along the horizontal axis (180 degrees)
  2. flip-vert: will rotate the top box along the vertical axis (180 degrees)
  3. slide-left: will slide the top box to the left
  4. slide-right: will slide the top box to the right
  5. rotate: will rotate the top box by 180 degrees
  6. sweep-hort: will sweep the top box along the horizontal axis
  7. sweep-vert: will sweep the top box along the vertical axis
  8. shrink: will shrink the top box until it is gone
  9. fade: Will fade out the top box

To Do:

  1. Add more effect when I have the time

Note: Even through it has default attributes you should really set your own. Make sure to set width, height, effect, style and the two div tags
