Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

redux-smooth-storage

Synopsis

This middelware script saves your redux state to either localStorage or sessionStorage. It will also rehydrate your state tree if you leave and come back. I am currently using it against 6 stores with a bit of api/storage needs, and its' not slow. I think we are good on performance. Though it should be known, I just want to make clear that you can always blow out the storage by running: window.sessionStorage.removeItem("YOUR STORAGE NAME") or, window.localStorage..etc..

Usage

Please go to npm, and pick up the package.

// All reducers import rootReducer from '../reducers'

import { STORAGE_NAME, STORAGE_TYPE } from '../constants/global'

const storage = smoothStorage(STORAGE_NAME, STORAGE_TYPE) const initialState = {} // destructure here const { watch, hydrateState } = storage

const middleware = process.env.NODE_ENV === 'production' ? [watch, thunk] : [watch, logger(), thunk ]

const store = applyMiddleware(...middleware)(createStore)(rootReducer, hydrateState() || initialState )

export default store

Tests

TODO: this is immensely important, but I just didn't have the time to implement atm. I will revisit shortly.

Methods

watch

This is the method in the middleware creation. It grabs the current state, stringifies it, and puts it into storage.

hydrateState

We try to retrieve the storage. If not there, return false. We should use initialState.

delete

Standard way to programmatically delete the storage, for whatever reason you may have - within your app. Perhaps on page exit, or onunload - you can delete it.

How to use?

In the example above, I have constants from another file, BUT - you do not have to. You can just pass in the string names etc.. right there, like so

I then destructure -> ES6, and pluck off the method and use that. But you can, of course, use the obj.methodName reference too:

-> so, watch, goes in your middleware array, like so, if destructuring

or, if you didn't destruct, you'd use:

please note: I am using "thunk, logger()", for example purposes only as "other" middleware. Your own app will have others.
