Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Red(ux) Req(uest Helpers and Whatnot)

Build Status

When performing AJAX calls with Redux, you typically want three actions.

  • start the request
  • it was ok
  • it failed

You'll typically want to keep track of some state for these things too.

  • the request is pending
  • the entity that was fetched
  • the request is complete
  • the error

And you probably want little action factories you can use so actions are always created the same way.

This package will help generate these for your with almost no effort.

Usage

Define your entities (objects and verbs)

import redreq from 'redreq'

// These are the entities we will request.
const requests = redreq([
  [ 'idea', 'create' ],
  [ 'idea', 'delete' ],
  [ 'idea', 'update' ],
  [ 'ideas', 'list' ],
  [ 'user', 'create' ],
  [ 'user', 'load' ],
  [ 'user', 'login' ],
  [ 'user', 'logout' ],
])

export { requests }
export default {
  ...requests.factories,

  // These are actions factories for things that happen without ajax requests.
  ideaRemoveById: (id) => ({ type: 'ideaRemoveById', id }),
  setEditMode: (id) => ({ type: 'setEditMode', id }),
}

Add the Reducer

import { requests } from './action-factories'

export default (state = initialState, action) => {
  // the generated reducers are tied in here
  state = requests.reducer(state, action)

  switch (action.type) {
  // your regular reducers can stay here

  case 'ideaRemoveById':
    return {
      ...state,
      ideas: remove(state.ideas, {id: action.id}),
    }

  case 'setEditMode':
    return {
      ...state,
      editing: action.id,
    }

  // non-standard requests
  // If you need to do additional stuff for your generated actions, you can!
  case requests.action.type.user.logout.success:
    return {
      ...state,
      editing: null,
      ideas: [],
      newIdea: null,
      user: null,
    }

  // We can use the handy-dandy dot-notation to access our action types.
  case requests.action.type.idea.update.success:
    return {
      ...state,
      ideas: replace(state.ideas, action.idea),
    }

  default:
    return state
  }
}

Use the Action Factories

import actions from './action-factories'

export const createIdea = (rawIdea) => {
  return (dispatch) => {
    // refer to your action factories by dot-notation, too
    dispatch(actions.idea.create.req())
    return service.createIdea(rawIdea)
      .then((idea) => {
        dispatch(actions.idea.create.success(idea))
      })
      .catch((err) => {
        dispatch(actions.idea.create.failure(err.message))
      })
  }
}
