Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-websocketmanager

react-websocketmanager is a lightweight react component for mananing websocket connections.

Installation and Usage

Installing

npm install react-websocketmanager

Usage

import React, { useState, useEffect, useCallback } from 'react';
import { useWebSocketManager } from 'react-websocketmanager';

// Get the WebSocket manager instance and give authentication variable
const webSocketManager = useWebSocketManager("ws://localhost:8080", authentication);

const [messages, setMessages] = useState([]);
const [newMessage, setNewMessage] = useState('');
const handleSendMessage = useCallback(() => {
    if (newMessage.trim() !== '') {
        const message = { text: newMessage, timestamp: new Date().toLocaleTimeString([], { hour: '2-digit', minute: '2-digit' }) };
        setNewMessage('');
        if (webSocketManager) {
            webSocketManager.sendMessage({ message, messageType: 'chat' }); // You can send your message like this to your websocket server. Describing message like this, messageType: 'chat' is important because when you send it back to the frontend from websocket server it will be needed when you want to use other functions like addListener, removeListener
        }
    }
}, [newMessage, webSocketManager]);
useEffect(() => {
    const handleMessage = (messageDataFromServer) => {
        if (messageDataFromServer.serverMessageType === 'chat') {
            setMessages((prevMessages) => [...prevMessages, messageDataFromServer.serverChatMessage]);
        }
    };
    if (webSocketManager) {
        webSocketManager.addListener('chat', handleMessage); // Write the messageType you wrote when you sended message to the websocket server through sendMessage function
        return () => {
            webSocketManager.removeListener('chat', handleMessage); // You can use this function for cleanups.
            webSocketManager.closeConnection();
        };
    }
}, [webSocketManager]);
const handleKeyPress = (event) => {
    if (event.key === 'Enter') {
        handleSendMessage();
    }
};

Functions

useWebSocketManager("ws://localhost:3000", authentication) Create a websocket connection. Edit the string part as whatever your localhost is. authentication should be a variable that contains a boolean value so that there will be no unnecessary websocket request and server wont tire itself with unnecessary websocket requests.

sendMessage({message, messageType}) With this function, you can send message to your WebSocket server. Remember to specify what kind of message you send through messageType

addListener(messageType, callback) With this function, add your messageType when you used sendMessage function and add callback(The function to be called when a message of the specified type is received.). Goal of this function is to add a listener for a specific message type.

removeListener(messageType, callback) Same rules applied to addListener applies to removeListener. Goal of this function is to remove a listener for a specific message type. It is usually used for cleanups of effect hooks.

closeConnection() Simply close the connection. It is usually used for cleanups of effect hooks.
