Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-use-search-params-state

React hook to use URL search params as state. It has the same API as useState and works with react-router v7.

Note: for react-router v6, use version 1.0.x of this library.

Install

npm install react-use-search-params-state

or

yarn add react-use-search-params-state

Usage

Import the hook and the params definition type. Then create a params definition object containing the params you want to use.

The key is the name of the param. The value is an object with the following properties:

type: the type of the param. Can be string, number or boolean.

default: the default value of the param. If the param is not present in the URL, this value will be used.

multiple: (optional) if the param can have multiple values. If true, the value will be an array of the type specified in type.

Example:

import { useSearchParamsState, SearchParamsStateType } from 'react-use-search-params-state'

const filtersDefaults: SearchParamsStateType = {
  minPrice: { type: 'number', default: null },
  maxPrice: { type: 'number', default: null },
  isSold: { type: 'boolean', default: true },
  types: { type: 'string', default: null, multiple: true },
  years: { type: 'number', default: [], multiple: true },
}

Use the hook in your functional component the same way you use useState:

const TestFilters = () => {
  const [filterParams, setFilterParams] = useSearchParamsState(filtersDefaults)

  return <div>Min Price: {filterParams.minPrice}</div>
}

When you need to change any of the values, use the set... function with an object containing the name of the param and the new value(s):

<div>
  Min price:
  <input
    type='text'
    value={filterParams.minPrice ?? ''}
    onChange={(e) => setFilterParams({ minPrice: e.target.value })}
  />
  <button onClick={() => setFilterParams({ minPrice: 100 })}>set minPrice to 100</button>
</div>

The set... function will update only the params that are present in the object. The rest of the params will remain the same. This allow to have multiple components that can save their state in the URL without interfering with each other.

For a complete example, see the example/ folder or this CodeSandbox.
