Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

React Ripple Hook

Overview

The useRipple hook adds a material design-inspired ripple effect to any React element. It dynamically appends a div that animates outward from the click point within the element, creating a visually appealing feedback for interactions. This effect is commonly seen in material design components, enhancing the user experience by providing immediate, tactile feedback on clickable elements.

Installation

This hook is designed to be integrated into your React project. Ensure that you have React installed in your project before using useRipple.

Usage

To use the useRipple hook, you need to pass a reference to the element you want the ripple effect applied to. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Import the Hook First, import the useRipple hook into your component file.

import { useRipple } from 'react-ripple-hook';

Step 2: Create a Ref for Your Target Element Use React's useRef hook to create a reference for the DOM element that will have the ripple effect.

const buttonRef = useRef < HTMLButtonElement > null;

Step 3: Apply the useRipple Hook Now, apply the useRipple hook in your component, passing the created ref as an argument.

useRipple({ elementRef: buttonRef });

Step 4: Attach the Ref to Your Element Finally, attach the created ref to your target element using the ref attribute.

<button ref={buttonRef}>Click Me</button>

Example

Below is a complete example of a functional component with a button that utilizes the useRipple hook.

import React, { useRef } from 'react';
import { useRipple } from 'react-ripple-hook';

const RippleButton = () => {
    const buttonRef = useRef < HTMLButtonElement > null;
    useRipple({ elementRef: buttonRef });

    return <button ref={buttonRef}>Click Me</button>;
};

export default RippleButton;

Customization

The default color of the ripple effect is a light black (rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1)). You can customize the rippleStyles object within the useRipple hook if you wish to change the color or other styles.

Note

This hook directly manipulates the DOM, which is generally against React's principles of working with the Virtual DOM. However, for effects like these that are purely cosmetic and do not affect the application state, this approach can be acceptable and performant.
