Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, πŸ‘‹, I’m Ryan HefnerΒ  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you πŸ™

Easily fetch data in your React components, with similar APIs to react-apollo πŸŽ‰

You can use hooks or HOC, both are supported. πŸŽ‰

NOTE: This project is still very much work in progress, use at your own risk ⚠️

Features

  • React hooks
  • SSR support with Suspense using react-ssr-prepass (No multi-rendering on the server!)
  • Simple built-in cache
  • TypeScript support
  • Testing utilities
  • React Suspense integration for implementing render-as-you-fetch pattern ⚠️ (experimental)

Installing

yarn add react-isomorphic-data

Example

import React from 'react';
import ReactDOM from 'react-dom';
import { useData, useLazyData, DataProvider, createDataClient } from 'react-isomorphic-data';

const dataClient = createDataClient({
  initialCache: window.__cache || {},
  ssr: false,
});

const Component = () => {
  const { data, loading } = useData('https://pokeapi.co/api/v2/pokemon/3/', {});

  return (
    <div>
      <h1>This is a Component.</h1>
      {loading ? (
        'loading...'
      ) : (
        <div>
          <pre>{JSON.stringify(data, null, 2)}</pre>
        </div>
      )}
    </div>
  );
};

ReactDOM.render(
  <DataProvider client={dataClient}>
    <Component />
  </DataProvider>,
  document.getElementById('root')
);

SSR example with express

import express from 'express';
import React from 'react';
import { renderToString } from 'react-dom/server';
import { DataProvider, createDataClient } from 'react-isomorphic-data';
import { getDataFromTree } from 'react-isomorphic-data/ssr';
import fetch from 'node-fetch';

import App from './App';

// react-isomorphic-data needs fetch to be available in the global scope
global.fetch = fetch;

const server = express();

server.get('/*', async (req: express.Request, res: express.Response) => {
  const dataClient = createDataClient({
    initialCache: {},
    ssr: true,
    headers: {
      // forward headers from client to the REST API (such as cookies)
      'cookie': req.header('cookie'),
      'my-custom-header': 'will be sent on all requests',
  }});

  const reactApp = (
    <DataProvider client={dataClient}>
      <App />
    </DataProvider>
  );

  try {
    await getDataFromTree(reactApp);
  } catch (err) {
    console.error('Error while trying to getDataFromTree', err);
  }

  const markup = renderToString(reactApp);

  res.send(
    `<!doctype html>
      <html lang="">
      <head>
        <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge" />
        <meta charSet='utf-8' />
        <title>Razzle TypeScript</title>
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
        <script>
          window.__cache=${JSON.stringify(dataClient.cache)}
        </script>
      </head>
      <body>
        <div id="root">${markup}</div>
      </body>
    </html>`
  );
});
