Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-higher-event

Declarative API to listen to events outside of a component

What issues does it solve?

The React synthetic event system doesn’t interact in the same event loop as plain DOM events. This means that listeners attached using addEventListener in your lifecycles hooks will not be in the same phase as the ones you declare using React props.

class MyComponent extends React.Component {
    state = { isOpened: false }

    componentDidMount() {
        document.body.addEventListener('click', this.close)
    }

    componentWillUnmount() {
        document.body.removeEventListener('click', this.close)
    }

    close = () => {
        this.setState({
            isOpened: false,
        })
    }

    open = (event) => {
        event.stopPropagation() // will not stop propagation of native click event to document.body
        this.setState({
            isOpened: true,
        })
    }

    render() {
        return (
            <div>
                <div onClick={this.open}>open</div>
                {this.state.isOpened && <div>{/* some stuff */}</div>}
            </div>
        )
    }
}

ReactHigherEvent solves this issue by using the React event system and making it accessible declaratively anywhere. Just pass your listener as a prop to <ReactHigherEvent>, which you can use as a transparent component wrapper wherever you want in your component tree, and it will work!

Install

$ npm install --save react-higher-event

Import

// ES5/commonJS
var ReactHigherEvent = require('react-higher-event')
// ES6
import {
    ReactHigherEvent,
    ReactHigherEventProvider,
} from 'react-higher-event'

Usage

ReactHigherEventProvider

Put this component at the root of your app so that it can listen to events at the top.

NOTE: Any props you pass in other than props.component will be directly applied to the root DOM element, so you can pass in styles or a className (e.g. to ensure it covers the whole document)

ReactDOM.render(
    <ReactHigherEventProvider className="app-root">
        {/* my components */}
    </ReactHigherEventProvider>,
)

This component accepts children, a component property so you can replace the default <div> used, and uses ref forwarding to pass any ref along to the ref prop of the container component that gets rendered.

ReactDOM.render(
    <ReactHigherEventProvider
        component={CustomThing}
        ref={handleContainerRef}
    >
        {/* my components */}
    </ReactHigherEventProvider>,
)

ReactHigherEvent

Use this component where you want to listen to higher events:

<ReactHigherEvent onClick={this.handleGlobalClick}>
    {/* if you want to avoid triggering the “higher event”, you will want to stopPropagating from your component */}
    <div onClick={(event) => event.stopPropagation()}>hello world</div>
</ReactHigherEvent>
