Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

pub-pkg-editor

Simple textarea-based editor for pub-server with live preview using jQuery.

This editor runs in the browser and depends on modern browser history management support. It can be served either by pub-server, or from a static website.

The /pub/ window is split into a source editor section on the left and a preview on the right.

Changes made to the source on the left are immediately reflected in the generated HTML on the right.

Changes are also saved to disk immediately when running pub-server locally or when logged-in to a pub-gatekeeper in the cloud.

installation

pub-pkg-editor is included with pub-server and enabled by default when the server is used from the command line.

To run pub-server without the editor, use pub -E or set opts.noEditor = true, the default when running programmatically.

how it works

This editor is packaged as a pub-pkg (see pub-config.js). Any page can be opened in the editor by navigating to:

/pub/?page={page-url}

The main window contains a simple textarea on the left, and preview pane on the right. An AJAX request loads pub-generator and source for the entire site. The preview pane holds an iframe initially loaded with the site's root page, but replaced immediately, with the content of the page specified in the page parameter.

The preview has 2 modes

  1. In fragment selection mode (which is the default), clicking on a text fragment surrounded by dotted lines opens the markdown source for that fragment in the editor. In this mode, links within selectable text fragments cannot be navigated.

  2. fragment selection mode is toggled on/off using the finger button at the top right. When toggled off, links within text fragments can be navigated to reach other pages on the site.

See pub-preview for more details.
