Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

PR From Issue (PFI)

pfi is a lightweight command line tool that makes it easy to create a Git Branch and Pull Request from a Jira issue.

Setup:

  1. npm install -g pr-from-issue. it is recommended to install globally so you can use it easily across all repositories, instead of installing it inside each repo.

  2. Add the following to your .zshrc or bash_profile:

export JIRA_ORG="yourorg" // this is the prefix of all your Jira/Atlassian URLs
export JIRA_EMAIL="[email protected]" // this is the email you use to log into JIRA
export JIRA_API_TOKEN="string" // generate one here: https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security/api-tokens
  1. This tool assumes you have Git and GitHub Cli installed and working on your machine. Ensure that you can successfully run commands like git checkout -b my-new-branch and gh list before attempting to use this tool. Install GitHub CLI with Homebrew by running brew install gh.

Usage:

  1. cd into the relevant git repository
  2. git checkout back to your repository's default branch (likely main or master).
  3. ensure you have no outstanding changes & your working tree is clean.
  4. copy the Issue Link from JIRA
  5. run the pfi command

Example:

pfi https://yourorg.atlassian.net/browse/ABC-123

Running this command will do the following:

  1. create a branch named abc-123-title-of-issue
  2. checkout to that branch locally
  3. create an initial commit
  4. push that commit to remote
  5. create a Pull Request for the branch.

It should print the URL for your new Pull Request in the terminal output.
