Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

node proxy to query postgres but output as influx for grafana backend

npm i postgres-influx-mimic

Postgres db contains jsonb records looking like (the data could come from any table):

{
   "_id": "e832faf5b9421d53f7da348755db8e09",
   "_rev": "1-3b6906d2712b795411c1e0f3405f6d7c",
   "type": "counter",
   "name": "statsd.packets_received",
   "count": 7003,
   "ts": 1424734183
}

start the proxy

[email protected]:~/pg-influx % node pg-influx.js
Listening on port 8086
Connected to postgres

in another window query it:

curl -G 'http://192.168.3.22:8086/query?pretty=true' --data-urlencode "q=WITH \
results AS ( \
  SELECT to_timestamp((doc->>'ts')::int) at time zone 'UTC' AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value FROM aatest \
  WHERE doc->>'name'='statsd.packets_received' AND (doc->>'count')::numeric > 0 \
  ORDER BY time \
), \
values AS (SELECT json_agg(json_build_array(time,value)) AS v FROM results) \
SELECT '{\"results\": [{ \
            \"series\": [{ \
                    \"name\": \"statsd.packets_received\", \
                    \"columns\": [\"time\", \"value\"], \
                    \"values\": ' || v || ' \
                }] \
        }]}' AS ret FROM values"

Should give back something similar to influx which can be used for grafana

[mike@f10 ~]$ curl -G 'http://192.168.3.22:8086/query?pretty=true' --data-urlencode "q=WITH \

Getting results with different time format: Change to_timestamp((doc->>'ts')::int) at time zone 'UTC' AS time To: (doc->>'ts')::numeric * 1000 AS time

[1424789698000, 2712],
[1424789701000, 1826],
[1424789704000, 263]

I have tested this and can see grafana making a request to the daemon:

/query?db=na&epoch=ms&p=na&q=WITH+results+AS+(+SELECT+(doc-%3E%3E%27ts%27)::numeric+*+1000+AS+time,+(doc-%3E%3E%27count%27)::numeric+AS+value+FROM+aatest+WHERE+doc-%3E%3E%27name%27%3D%27statsd.packets_received%27+AND+(doc-%3E%3E%27count%27)::numeric+%3E+0+ORDER+BY+time),+values+AS+(SELECT+json_agg(json_build_array(time,value))+AS+v+FROM+results)+SELECT+%27%7B%22results%22:+%5B%7B+%22series%22:+%5B%7B+%22name%22:+%22statsd.packets_received%22,+%22columns%22:+%5B%22time%22,+%22mean%22%5D,+%22values%22:+%27+%7C%7C+v+%7C%7C+%27+%7D%5D+%7D%5D%7D%27+AS+ret+FROM+values&u=na

however it doesnt seem to like the results returned current output from daemon looks like:

After a little messing about i have now added the CORS stuff to the node daemon and I get a graph!

More info

The $timeFilter variable is avaliable to the raw SQL so something like the below:

 SELECT (doc->>'ts')::numeric * 1000 AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value FROM aatest
 WHERE ($timeFilter) ...

Is expanded to:

 SELECT (doc->>'ts')::numeric * 1000 AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value
 FROM aatest WHERE (time > now() - 6h) ...

Which postgres doesnt like so needs to be more like:

 SELECT (doc->>'ts')::numeric * 1000 AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value
 FROM aatest WHERE ( to_timestamp((doc->>'ts')::numeric) > now() - interval '6h')

I think https://github.com/grafana/grafana/blob/v2.1.x/public/app/plugins/datasource/influxdb/datasource.js#L175 needs to be customised for this to work properly.

The $interval variable is also avaliable in the raw sql again this needs to be properly quoted.

Multiple series - the below example sql shows how to retrieve multiple series in one result:

WITH
results1 AS (
  SELECT (doc->>'ts')::numeric * 1000 AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value
  FROM aatest WHERE doc->>'name'='statsd.packets_received' AND (doc->>'count')::numeric > 0 ORDER BY time
),
results2 AS (
  SELECT ((doc->>'ts')::numeric - 600) * 1000 AS time, (doc->>'count')::numeric AS value
  FROM aatest WHERE doc->>'name'='statsd.packets_received' AND (doc->>'count')::numeric > 0 ORDER BY time
),
results AS (
  SELECT '{ "results": [' AS v
  UNION ALL
  SELECT '{ "series": [{ "name": "statsd.packets_received-1", "columns": ["time", "count"], "values": ' || json_agg(json_build_array(time,value))  || ' }] }' AS v FROM results1
  UNION ALL
  SELECT ',{ "series": [{ "name": "statsd.packets_received-2", "columns": ["time", "count"], "values": ' || json_agg(json_build_array(time,value))  || ' }] }' AS v FROM results2
  UNION ALL
  SELECT ']}' AS v
)
SELECT string_agg(v,'') AS ret FROM results

2 Series

You can just generate some random data to play with:

WITH results1 AS (SELECT extract(epoch from x) * 1000 AS time , random() * 9 + 1 AS value FROM generate_series ( '2015-10-10'::timestamp , now()::timestamp, '1 minute'::interval) x LIMIT 1000000), results AS (SELECT '{ "results": [' AS v UNION ALL SELECT '{ "series": [{ "name": "myseries.random", "columns": ["time", "count"], "values": ' || json_agg(json_build_array(time,value))  || ' }] }' AS v FROM results1 UNION ALL SELECT ']}' AS v) SELECT string_agg(v,'') AS ret FROM results

Random

A funny sine curve:

WITH results1 AS (SELECT extract(epoch from x) * 1000 AS time , SIN(extract(minute from x) * 3.141592653 / 12) AS value FROM generate_series ( '2015-10-10'::timestamp , now()::timestamp, '1 minute'::interval) x LIMIT 1000000), results AS (SELECT '{ "results": [' AS v UNION ALL SELECT '{ "series": [{ "name": "myseries.random", "columns": ["time", "count"], "values": ' || json_agg(json_build_array(time,value))  || ' }] }' AS v FROM results1 UNION ALL SELECT ']}' AS v) SELECT string_agg(v,'') AS ret FROM results

Sine Curve
