Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

PostCSS Viewport Height Correction

PostCSS plugin to solve the popular problem when 100vh doesn’t fit the mobile browser screen.

Installation

yarn add postcss-viewport-height-correction
# --- OR ----
npm install --save postcss-viewport-height-correction

And then add this javascript to public/index.html (for React), or add to template.html (for Preact).

var customViewportCorrectionVariable = 'vh';

function setViewportProperty(doc) {
  var prevClientHeight;
  var customVar = '--' + ( customViewportCorrectionVariable || 'vh' );
  function handleResize() {
    var clientHeight = doc.clientHeight;
    if (clientHeight === prevClientHeight) return;
    requestAnimationFrame(function updateViewportHeight(){
      doc.style.setProperty(customVar, (clientHeight * 0.01) + 'px');
      prevClientHeight = clientHeight;
    });
  }
  handleResize();
  return handleResize;
}
window.addEventListener('resize', setViewportProperty(document.documentElement));

Check you project for existed PostCSS config: postcss.config.js in the project root, "postcss" section in package.json or postcss in bundle config.

If you already use PostCSS, add the plugin to plugins list:

module.exports = {
  plugins: [
+   require('postcss-viewport-height-correction'),
    require('autoprefixer')
  ]
}

If you do not use PostCSS, add it according to official docs and set this plugin in settings.

Configuration

You really will rarely need this. Use this when you have some conflicting css variable. We use --vh as variable to fix the viewport height. You can use --pvh or any other variable of your choice.

Configure postcss to use your variable.

module.exports = {
  plugins: [
+   require('postcss-viewport-height-correction')({ variable: 'pvh' }),
    require('autoprefixer')
  ]
}

Also change variable name in javascript you added. Change customViewportCorrectionVariable value to your variable.

+ var customViewportCorrectionVariable = 'pvh'
- var customViewportCorrectionVariable = 'vh'

NOTE: Only use plain alphabetical characters as custom variable name. We are using regex to patch viewport value, any variable with special characters can lead to unknown issues.

Inspiration

The viewport height which we use as "vh" unit in css does not give the actual viewport height but gives the height of the browser window. This plugin is an implememtation of CSS Tricks article on this issue.

Example Output

.foo {
    /* Input example */
    height: 100vh;
}

.bar {
    min-height: 50vh;
    max-height: 75vh;
    margin: -1vh;
}
.foo {
  /* Output example */
  height: 100vh;
  height: calc(var(--vh, 1vh) * 100); /* corrected viewport height using css custom variables */
}

.bar {
      min-height: calc(var(--vh, 1vh) * 50);
      max-height: calc(var(--vh, 1vh) * 75);
      margin: calc(var(--vh, 1vh) * -1);
}
