Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Polpo-icons

This library extends MatIcons to accept icons from any material icons theme (default, outlined, two-tone, round, sharp). All of those icons listed in material design page is not working in the font-icons. Look into better alternatives for the support of more icons.

There is typescript types defined for all of the material icons(not 100% accurate).

Example:

<po-icon>donut_small--outlined</po-icon>

Angular content change lifecycle hook is also implemented, so it accepts angular interpolation in html

Example:

<po-icon>{{icon}}</po-icon>

This library was generated with Angular CLI version 7.2.15.

How to implement

Reference css styles from Google's Material Icons.

This line should be placed into the index.html inside the <head></head> tags:

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Material+Icons|Material+Icons+Outlined|Material+Icons+Two+Tone|Material+Icons+Round|Material+Icons+Sharp" rel="stylesheet">

Then import the PoIconsModule from 'po-icons' to the module you want to use it in(app.module.ts).

Now use <po-icon></po-icon> from any of your module's component.html.

Remember syntax '--theme' after icon name to apply theme.

Customization

There are 3 optional attributes to modify po-icon content:

  • color: string; (color style like: '#000')
  • bgColor: string; (color style like: '#000')
  • size: number; (number in pixels. modifies font-size or svg width/height.)

use like following:

<po-icon [color]="#7ed321" [bgColor]="#4a4a4a" [size]="25px">account-login--open-iconic</po-icon>

More details

Do not use for production. This is experimental library.

Better alternatives

  1. Make own svg sprite.
    • Pros: most flexible (modifications, animations, extendability...).
    • Cons: svg may affect performance and svg sprites are supported only by newest browsers
  2. Use material design's non-spec-app (.png)
    • Pros: get all newest icons in use from the material-design page.
    • Cons: png is not flexible.
