Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

pemtools

Convert Buffers to/from PEM strings, and read/write SSH/RSA key files. supports DEK encryption.

Example: Create your own PEM

Say we wanted to represent a binary value as a string, allow someone to copy-paste it, and decode it safely on the other end. This can easily be done through the PEM format:

Let's try to encode a favicon:

$ wget s8f.org/favicon.ico

‘favicon.ico’ saved [1086/1086]

example-encode.js:

var pemtools = require('pemtools')
var fs = require('fs')

var buf = fs.readFileSync('favicon.ico')
fs.writeFileSync('favicon.pem', pemtools(buf, 'FAVICON').toString())
$ node example-encode.js
$ cat favicon.pem
-----BEGIN FAVICON-----
AAABAAEADxAAAAEAIAAoBAAAFgAAACgAAAAPAAAAIAAAAAEAIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD//gAA//4AAP/+AAD//gAA/64AAPfuAADDdgAA+3YAAON2
AADffgAA4+4AAPf+AAD//gAA//4AAP/+AAD//gAA
-----END FAVICON-----

example-decode.js:

var pemtools = require('pemtools')
var fs = require('fs')

var str = fs.readFileSync('favicon.pem', {encoding: 'utf8'})
var pem = pemtools(str, 'FAVICON')
fs.writeFileSync('favicon-decoded.ico', pem.toBuffer())

Now we have identically copied the file!

$ node example-decode.js
$ shasum *.ico
d5348fcedb9e3287c8a787ec6d6775b22853fb73  favicon-decoded.ico
d5348fcedb9e3287c8a787ec6d6775b22853fb73  favicon.ico

To use encryption, we simply pass a passphrase to the third argument of pemtools().

Example: Decrypt/decode an RSA key

Let's create a test key:

$ ssh-keygen -f test -N 'something super secret'
Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Your identification has been saved in test.
Your public key has been saved in test.pub.
The key fingerprint is:
e4:c8:51:b1:f0:b2:32:d1:8e:2c:0b:28:17:81:cb:81 [email protected]
The key's randomart image is:
+--[ RSA 2048]----+

|..o . + +        |

var fs = require('fs')

Now you can use the pure Buffer representation (the decrypted contents of the PEM) with pem.toBuffer() if you wish.
