Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Package Version Tracker

npm version

package-version-tracker is a command-line interface (CLI) tool that helps track the versions of npm packages in a project. It reads the package.json file, analyzes the versions of dependencies, and provides a report, allowing you to keep track of outdated or vulnerable packages easily.

Why Was This Created?

In large-scale projects, it can become difficult to keep track of the versions of various npm packages and their updates. This tool was created to simplify the process of tracking package versions and generating reports, so developers can easily see when dependencies need to be updated.

The tool helps with:

  • Keeping track of package versions – Identify which versions of your dependencies are installed and what version ranges are specified.
  • Generating reports – The tool generates a CSV report detailing the package name, version, and other important metadata.
  • Automation – As part of a CI/CD pipeline, this tool can be used to regularly check package versions and ensure they are up to date.

Features

  • Analyzes package.json and node_modules to list package versions.
  • Generates a CSV report for easy reference.
  • Provides a simple command-line interface (CLI) for quick use.
  • Supports automatic creation of a CSV report based on the current package versions in the project.

Installation

You can install package-version-tracker globally or locally via npm:

Global Installation

npm install -g package-version-tracker

Usage

pvt --help

This will display the available options, such as:

  • -d, --directory <directory>: Directory containing the package.json file (default: current working directory)
  • -o, --output <output>: Output file name for the CSV report (default: {project-name}_package_version_report.csv)
  • -d, --dependencies-only: Only scan dependencies, exclude dev-dependencies

Examples

    pvt
  2. Generate a report in a different directory:

    pvt --directory /path/to/project
  3. Generate a report with only dependency versions (exclude dev-dependencies):

    pvt --dependencies-only
  4. Generate a report with a custom output file name:
