On the game's main menu, Mario may be leveled up by playing a stage. Each level made by a player will result in Mario gaining a number of Power Stars. Each level, Mario collects 100 coins and a 1-Up Mushroom. Mario can fill up his stat bar completely by completing a stage. This stat bar is in the shape of a turtle, which can be seen on the level select screen. Once Mario's Health is at full, the stat bar will change its color. When Mario recovers from a fall or other status, the turtle's color will change back to its initial color. Special “Trips” (Special Coin Types) are a type of colored coin rewarded on certain stages. After successfully completing a level, these coins are obtained when a level begins. Like in Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario World, there are various ways that Mario may be dropped to the ground from losing Health; there are three types of life bars that will shrink, depending on the type. If Mario runs into an enemy, he will lose some of his Life Stars, and the result will depend on the enemy that he encounters.
For the new modes of play in New Super Mario Bros. U that aren't already mentioned, there are a total of ten different power-ups that Mario can be given by finding them along his way. These include Fire Flower (literal flower), Fire Mario, Fire Luigi, Fire Yoshi, Fire Baby Yoshi, Bee, Flower, Mushroom, Coin, 1-Up (Mushroom/Coin), and Power Stars.
