Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

NervJS IE8+ Boilerplate

  • Minimal Configuration
  • Work on IE8+ and other modern browsers
  • Identical API with React 16

Anyone can imagine that the code below does work on IE8?

index.html

<body>
  <div id="app"></div>
  <script src="dist/index.js"></script>
</body>

src/index.js (webpack entry point)

import React from 'react'
import ReactDOM from 'react-dom'
import App from './App'

ReactDOM.render(
  <App name="NervJS" />,
  document.getElementById('app')
)

src/App.jsx

import React from 'react'

export default class App extends React.Component {
  render() {
    return <div>Hello {this.props.name}!</div>
  }
}

How it works

Transpile to ES3

Transpile ES5 (or above) codes to ES3 ones, so legacy browsers like IE8 can handle them.

npm

# need to transpile to ES3
$ yarn add --dev @babel/core @babel/preset-env @babel/plugin-transform-property-literals @babel/plugin-transform-member-expression-literals

# need to handle React
$ yarn add --dev @babel/preset-react

.babelrc

{
  "presets": [
    ["@babel/env", {
      "spec": true,
      "useBuiltIns": false
    }],
    "@babel/react"
  ],
  "plugins": [
    "@babel/transform-member-expression-literals",
    "@babel/transform-property-literals"
  ]
}

Polyfill for Internet Explorer 8 (or below)

But on IE8, we need some polyfills like Object.defineProperty().

index.html

<head>
<!--[if lte IE 8]>
<script src="polyfill.min.js"></script>
<![endif]-->
</head>

This repo uses [email protected] as polyfill.min.js, but some other polyfills might work if implemented core ES5 APIs.

Handle ReactJS as ALIAS

ReactJS does not support IE8.

So we tackle it down by internally using NervJS.

Webpack Alias

webpack.config.js

module.exports = {
  resolve: {
    alias: {
      'react': 'nervjs',
      'react-dom': 'nervjs'
    }
  }
}

Babel Alias

webpack.config.js

module.exports = {
  module: {
    rules: [
      {
        test: /\.jsx?$/,
        use: 'babel-loader'
      }
    ]
  }
}

.babelrc

Resolve with babel-plugin-module-resolver.

{
  "plugins": [
    ["module-resolver", {
      "root": ["."],
      "alias": {
        "react": "nervjs",
        "react-dom": "nervjs"
      }
    }]
  ]
}

How to use

$ git clone https://github.com/saltyshiomix/nerv-ie8-boilerplate
$ cd nerv-ie8-boilerplate
$ yarn
$ yarn build

Finally, open index.html on your Internet Explorer 8 or modern browsers.
