when the tournament begins, liu kang, kung lao, mileena, and shao kahn all arrive. liu kang and kung lao fight in the first stage, with both of them being defeated. however, they meet again in the second stage, with liu kang escaping with a split-second advantage over his opponent, and then winning the final round. in the next round, they fight for the third time. liu kang defeats kung lao in a final round of the third round, and then defeats shao kahn in the final round. he then hands the match to kung lao and captures shao kahn. however, he is confronted by mileena, who has just arrived. he tells mileena that he is willing to fight her, and she agrees. liu kang then tells mileena that the mortal kombat tournament is over, and asks her to stop fighting. this angers her, and she throws him to the ground, and begins fighting him. liu kang is able to counter her attack, and is about to deliver a finishing move, when he is interrupted by shao kahn, who states that liu kang is "no longer a warrior". he then challenges liu kang to a fight to the death. 


shao kahn has liu kang fight each of the other warriors in the mortal kombat tournament one-on-one, with liu kang defeating each of them except for mileena. he next faces kahn, who appears as a younger man. before the fight, he says that he believes that liu kang is the strongest of the earthrealm warriors, and that he will be the first to die. after the first round begins, he says that liu kang will be defeated in a matter of seconds. liu kang defeats him and leaves him for dead. the following day, when liu kang is leaving the outworld palace for the mortal kombat tournament, he finds a note addressed to him that is written by shang tsung, apologizing for his actions. he continues to the tournament, and defeats each of his opponents in the first seven rounds. he has a rematch against kahn, and kahn is defeated, but only after surviving a barrage of shao kahn's numerous attacks. when the match ends, liu kang is announced the winner, and the tournament begins. 84d34552a1
