Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

mongo-task-scheduler

NPM version

A promise based task scheduler for Node.js using a mongodb backing store.

Package Dependency Notice

NOTE: This package is compatible with the MongoDB nodejs driver versions 4 through 6 and supports MongoDB server versions 5 through 7.

Usage

Installation

npm install mongo-task-scheduler --save

Require & Instantiate

Example:

const TaskScheduler = require('mongo-task-scheduler');

const scheduler = new TaskScheduler();

Database Configuration

Set the .databasePromise property to a function that returns a promise that (eventually) returns a mongodb database connection.

Example:

const MongoClient = require('mongodb').MongoClient;

const mongoUri = ...;
const mongoOptions = ...;

scheduler.databasePromise = function() {
  // Return a promise to return a mongo database connection here...
  return MongoClient.connect(mongoUri, mongoOptions);
};

Schedule one or more Tasks

Use the .scheduleTask method to schedule a task and provide a processing method.

scheduler.scheduleTask(id, cronSchedule, worker)

Scheduling a task will cause the task scheduler to immediately start polling for work for that specified task. By default, the task scheduler looks for tasks that need running at once every second (configurable by overridding the .pollingInterval property). Polling will continue to occur until the .stopPolling() method is called.

The second parameter cronSchedule specifies the how often to run the task and uses cron syntax:

*    *    *    *    *    *
┬    ┬    ┬    ┬    ┬    ┬
│    │    │    │    │    |
│    │    │    │    │    └ day of week (0 - 7) (0 or 7 is Sun)
│    │    │    │    └───── month (1 - 12)
│    │    │    └────────── day of month (1 - 31)
│    │    └─────────────── hour (0 - 23)
│    └──────────────────── minute (0 - 59)
└───────────────────────── second (0 - 59, optional)

The third parameter worker specifies the processing method for the task. When the task needs to be run, the provided processing method will be called.

Example (runs every morning at 5 AM):

scheduler.scheduleTask('daily-reminder', '0 5 * * *', function () {
  // ... send the reminder here
  // this can return a promise (chain) if needed.
});
