Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Momentum Modal (React)

Momentum Modal is a package that lets you implement backend-driven modal dialogs for Inertia apps with React.

Installation

First you need to install the Laravel package. You can find the full documentation of Momentum Modal here.

Then install the react adapter:

npm i momentum-modal-react

Warning The package utilizes axios under the hood. If your app is already using axios as a dependency, make sure to lock it to the same version Inertia uses.

npm i [email protected]

Setup

Modal is a headless component, meaning you have full control over its look, whether it's a modal dialog or a slide-over panel. You are free to use any 3rd-party solutions to power your modals, such as Headless UI or Radix.

Put the Modal component somewhere within the layout. Also, you can pass the component resolver to the Modal component, or use it globally.

Global

// app.jsx
...
globalThis.resolveMomentumModal = (name) => {
    const modals = import.meta.glob("./modals/**/*.jsx", {eager: true});
    return modals[`./modals/${name}.jsx`];
};
createInertiaApp(...)
...

// YourLayout.jsx
import {Modal} from 'momentum-modal-react';

export function YourLayout({children}) {
  return <>
    {children}
    <Modal/>
  </>
}

In the component

// YourLayout.jsx
import {Modal} from 'momentum-modal-react';

const resolver = (name) => {
  const modals = import.meta.glob('../path/to/your/modals/**/*.jsx', {eager: true});
  return modals[`../path/to/your/modals/${name}.jsx`];
};

export function YourLayout({children}) {
  return (
    <>
      {children}
      <Modal resolver={resolver} />
    </>
  );
}

The resolver can be the same you use to render Inertia pages.

Usage

Modals have their own routes, letting you access them even via direct URLs. Define routes for your modal pages.

// background context / base page
Route::get('{user}', ShowUser::class)
    ->name('users.show');

// modal route
Route::get('{user}/{tweet}', ShowTweet::class)
    ->name('users.tweets.show');

Render a modal from a controller. Specify the base route to render the background when the modal is accessed directly.

class ShowTweet extends Controller
{
    public function __invoke(User $user, Tweet $tweet)
    {
        return Inertia::modal('Tweets/Show')
            ->with([
                'user' => $user,
                'tweet' => $tweet,
            ])
            ->baseRoute('users.show', $user);
    }
}
