Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Mocklet CLI

Mocklet is a command-line tool that lets you mock any API call offline.

It's a simple, lightweight server that can return pre-configured responses to simulate API endpoints, making it ideal for testing and development environments without real API connectivity.

Features

  • Mock local HTTP endpoints with ease, with one command

  • Supports any HTTP method (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc.)

  • Define responses as plain text, JSON, or HTML

  • Serve mock responses from a file or inline content

  • Supports custom HTTP status codes and ports

  • Cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) enabled

Installation

Ensure that you have Node.js installed, and then install Mocklet globally:

npm install -g mocklet

Usage

You can start mocking an endpoint with a simple command:

mocklet

This will start a mock server at the default /api endpoint, returning the default response.

Options

--url <endpoint>: The API endpoint to mock (default: /api). Must start with /.

--response <fileOrText>: The response to return. This can be a text, JSON, or a path to a response file (default: {"response": "success"}).

--port <number>: The port to run the server on (default: 8080).

--status <number>: The HTTP status code to return (default: 200).

Examples

  1. Custom endpoint
mocklet --url /api/data

This will start a mock server on port 8080 at the /api/data endpoint, returning the default response.

  1. Custom endpoint and response file
mocklet --url /api/data --response ./data.json

This will return the contents of data.json when accessing /api/data.

  1. Custom text response and status code
mocklet --response "Error: Can't connect to the API" --status 500

This will return an error message and the status code 500 when accessing /api.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure the --url starts with /.

  • If you provide a file as a response, ensure it exists and the path is correct.

  • If the specified port is in use, try another port with the --port option.
