Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

You can install marked-shiki using npm or yarn:

npm i marked-shiki shiki
# or
yarn add marked-shiki shiki

Usage

Once you've installed this extension, you can use it in your marked configuration. Here's an example of how to configure it:

Browser

Please take a moment to review the index.html file.

See marked-shiki on RunKit

Node.js

Say we have the following file example.md:

# Example

A [marked](https://marked.js.org/) A marked extension for [Shiki](https://shiki.style/).

## Transformers

### `transformerNotationDiff`

Use `[!code ++]` and `[!code --]` to mark added and removed lines.

For example, the following code

````md
```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('hewwo') // [\!code --]
  console.log('hello') // [\!code ++]
}
```
````

will be transformed to

```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('hewwo') // [!code --]
  console.log('hello') // [!code ++]
}
```

### `transformerNotationHighlight`

Use `[!code highlight]` to highlight a line (adding `highlighted` class).

````md
```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('Highlighted') // [\!code highlight]
}
```
````

Results in

```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('Highlighted') // [!code highlight]
}
```

Alternatively, you can use the [`transformerMetaHighlight`](#transformermetahighlight) to highlight lines based on the meta string.

### `transformerNotationWordHighlight`

Use `[!code word:xxx]` to highlight a word (adding `highlighted-word` class).

````md
```js
export function foo() {
  // [\!code word:Hello]
  const msg = 'Hello World'
  console.log(msg) // prints Hello World
}
```
````

Results in

```js
export function foo() {
  // [!code word:Hello]
  const msg = 'Hello World'
  console.log(msg) // prints Hello World
}
```

You can also specify the number of occurrences to highlight, e.g. `[!code word:options:2]` will highlight the next 2 occurrences of `options`.

````md
```js
// [\!code word:options:2]
const options = { foo: 'bar' }
options.foo = 'baz'
console.log(options.foo) // this one will not be highlighted
```
````

```js
// [!code word:options:2]
const options = { foo: 'bar' }
options.foo = 'baz'
console.log(options.foo) // this one will not be highlighted
```

### `transformerNotationFocus`

Use `[!code focus]` to focus a line (adding `focused` class).

````md
```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('Focused') // [\!code focus]
}
```
````

Results in

```js
export function foo() {
  console.log('Focused') // [!code focus]
}
```

### `transformerNotationErrorLevel`

Use `[!code error]`, `[!code warning]`, to mark a line with an error level (adding `highlighted error`, `highlighted warning` class).

````md
```js
export function foo() {
  console.error('Error') // [\!code error]
  console.warn('Warning') // [\!code warning]
}
```
````

Results in

```js
export function foo() {
  console.error('Error') // [!code error]
  console.warn('Warning') // [!code warning]
}
```

### `transformerMetaHighlight`

Highlight lines based on the meta string provided on the code snippet. Requires integrations supports.

````md
```js {1,3-4}
console.log('1')
console.log('2')
console.log('3')
console.log('4')
```
````

Results in

```js {1,3-4}
console.log('1')
console.log('2')
console.log('3')
console.log('4')
```

### `transformerMetaWordHighlight`

Highlight words based on the meta string provided on the code snippet. Requires integrations supports.

````md
```js /Hello/
const msg = 'Hello World'
console.log(msg)
console.log(msg) // prints Hello World
```
````

Results in

```js /Hello/
const msg = 'Hello World'
console.log(msg) // prints Hello World
```

And our module example.js looks as follows:

import { readFileSync } from 'node:fs'
import { Marked } from 'marked'
import markedShiki from 'marked-shiki'
import { getHighlighter } from 'shiki'
// npm i @shikijs/transformers
import {
  transformerNotationDiff,
  transformerNotationHighlight,
  transformerNotationWordHighlight,
  transformerNotationFocus,
  transformerNotationErrorLevel,
  transformerMetaHighlight,
  transformerMetaWordHighlight
} from '@shikijs/transformers'

const highlighter = await getHighlighter({
  // In this case, we include the "js" language specifier to ensure that
  // Shiki applies the appropriate syntax highlighting for Markdown code
  // blocks.
  langs: ['md', 'js'],
  themes: ['github-dark-dimmed']
})

const html = await new Marked()
  .use(
    markedShiki({
      highlight(code, lang, props) {
        return highlighter.codeToHtml(code, {
          lang,
          theme: 'github-dark-dimmed',
          meta: { __raw: props.join(' ') }, // required by `transformerMeta*`
          transformers: [
            transformerNotationDiff(),
            transformerNotationHighlight(),
            transformerNotationWordHighlight(),
            transformerNotationFocus(),
            transformerNotationErrorLevel(),
            transformerMetaHighlight(),
            transformerMetaWordHighlight()
          ]
        })
      }
    })
  )
  .parse(readFileSync('example.md', 'utf8'))

console.log(html)

Now, running node example.js yields:

<h1>Example</h1>
<p>
  A <a href="https://marked.js.org/">marked</a> A marked extension for
  <a href="https://shiki.style/">Shiki</a>.
</p>

markedShiki(options: Options): MarkedExtension

This function creates a Marked extension that integrates Shiki for syntax highlighting.

import { marked } from 'marked'
import markedShiki from 'marked-shiki'
import { codeToHtml } from 'shiki'

const html = await marked.use(
  markedShiki({
    async highlight(code, lang) {
      return await codeToHtml(code, { lang, theme: 'min-light' })
    },
    container: `<figure class="highlighted-code">
<button class="btn-copy">Copy</button>
%s
</figure>
`
  }).parse(md)
)

options: An object containing the following properties:

  • highlight: A function that formats and highlights the code according to a specific coding style or convention.

  • container (optional): A string representing the HTML container for the highlighted code. Default is '%s'.

    Below are the available template placeholders:

    • %s: Represents the highlighted code.
    • %t: Represents the original code.
    • %l: Represents the language.
