Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Benchmark node.js markdown to html converter.

This is a script to compare 3 markdown to html converters.

Thanks to Jasper Van der Jeugt for the markdown random generator lorem-markdownum

Step 1.: Benchmark the 3 converters against each other

Step 2.: Test the markdown parsers during a fake template run against precompiled html

Results

Step 1. Fastest converter

The fastest converter is Marked and is up to 3x faster than the second.
It can process about 5400 ops/sec.

Step 2. Converters vs. Precompiled

Precompiled templating is up to 88x faster than parsing on the fly.
It can process about 400000 ops/sec.

Raw Results

Step 1.) Single convert

Convert a single markdown to html

Results:

>> Showdown x 2,324 ops/sec ±0.31% (99 runs sampled)
>> markdown-js x 1,610 ops/sec ±1.10% (98 runs sampled)
>> Marked x 5,680 ops/sec ±0.20% (99 runs sampled)
Fastest test is Marked at 2.4x faster than Showdown

Step 1.) Mutiple converts

Run 2165 converts in a loop

Results:

>> Showdown x 0.93 ops/sec ±1.88% (7 runs sampled)
>> markdown-js x 0.57 ops/sec ±0.68% (6 runs sampled)
>> Marked x 2.78 ops/sec ±0.47% (11 runs sampled)
Fastest test is Marked at 3.0x faster than Showdown

Step 2.) Mutiple converts to html

Run 2165 converts in a loop and create a single ul/li list out of it.

Results:

>> Showdown x 0.83 ops/sec ±1.45% (7 runs sampled)
>> Markdown.js x 0.55 ops/sec ±1.79% (6 runs sampled)
>> Marked x 2.12 ops/sec ±3.88% (10 runs sampled)
>> Pre-converted to HTML x 64.11 ops/sec ±0.65% (53 runs sampled)
Fastest test is Pre-converted to HTML at 30.3x faster than Marked

Step 2.) Single converts to html

Run one converts in a loop and create a single ul/li list out of it.

Results:

>> Showdown x 2,182 ops/sec ±1.30% (101 runs sampled)
>> Markdown.js x 1,586 ops/sec ±0.94% (99 runs sampled)
>> Marked x 5,196 ops/sec ±0.50% (97 runs sampled)
>> Pre-converted to HTML x 454,436 ops/sec ±0.41% (99 runs sampled)
Fastest test is Pre-converted to HTML at 87.5x faster than Marked

Fetch random markdown from the lorem-markdownum http api and save it to data.txt

TMO = default=500 fetch interval timeout in ms to prevent overloading the lorem-markdownum http api

pre-convert to bench against precompiled markdown.

Convert every example from data.txt to a array element with the raw markdown in md and the html compiled version to html.
The results will be saved to data.json.
This is required to do the step 2 benchmarks.
