Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Logzio Shipper

We developed this to ship logs from Amazon Cloudwatch to the Logzio ELK stack. We do this by providing a "shipper" lambda function which you will attach to your existing log streams in Cloudwatch.

stream to AWS image

If you're interested in a AWS logging framework then we recomment aws-log as we built it for just this purpose.

Note: If you want to use a different logging framework that's probably ok too but just be sure that it emits structured JSON data when writting to stdout.

Getting Started

Use the steps below to get your logs into Logzio.

  1. Ensure you have the Serverless Framework installed (or upgrade to latest):

    # yarn
    yarn global add serverless
    # npm
    npm install -g serverless
  2. Install (or upgrade to latest) the Yeoman Generator:

    # yarn
    yarn global add yo
    # npm
    npm install -g yo
  3. Go to your serverless repo's root directory

  4. Download and run the logzio-shipper yeoman template:

    # yarn
    yarn global add generator-logzio-shipper
    # npm
    npm install -g generator-logzio-shipper

    # and then, yeoman
    yo logzio-shipper

The template install will do the following:

    1. Install the logzio-shipper repo (aka, this repo) as a dependency to your project
    2. Using your serverless.yml and ~/.aws/credentials files, it will set key variables for logzio (port, host, and token) into your AWS's SSM.
    3. Add a definition for the logzioShipper handler in your serverless.yml file (if it's not there already)

Note: SSM is a great way to store important but secure data that doesn't fit well into an environment variables. If you're interested in what variables are set you can type `` in your console (assuming you've installed the AWS CLI)
