Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Live Network Usage Monitor

This project is a Node.js installation package named livspeedserver that monitors and displays network usage in real-time. It provides a live view of upload and download speeds, along with average speeds over time. The application also supports night mode for better visibility in low-light environments.

Features

  • Real-time monitoring of upload and download speeds
  • Display of average upload and download speeds
  • Night mode support that persists across sessions
  • Responsive design for different screen sizes

Prerequisites

  • Node.js (v14 or higher)
  • ifstat tool (for network statistics)

Installation

  1. Install the ifstat tool: Ensure you have ifstat installed on your system. You can install it using the following command:

    # For Debian/Ubuntu
    sudo apt-get install ifstat

    # For macOS (using Homebrew)
    brew install ifstat
  2. Install the package globally: Use npm to install the livspeedserver package globally:

    npm install -g livspeedserver

Running the Application

  1. Start the server: After installation, you can start the server using the command:

    livspeedserver

You can also specify a custom port using the -p flag:

    livspeedserver -p 8080
  2. Access the application: Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost:8010 (or the port you have set).

Configuration

  • The application serves static files from the public folder.
  • Network usage data is fetched from the endpoint /network-usage. Ensure you have a server or API providing this data in the correct format.

Command-Line Options

  • Custom Port: Specify a custom port with the -p option:

    livspeedserver -p 8080
  • Disable Console Logging: To disable console logging of network speeds, use the --no-log option:

    livspeedserver --no-log

Night Mode

  • Click the "Toggle Night Mode" button to switch between light and dark themes. Your preference will be saved in the browser's local storage.
