Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

light-rbac

A simple implementation of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) method.

Installation

Install the package using npm:

npm install light-rbac

Usage

Setting up roles and policies

First, create a rolesPolicy object containing your roles, actions, and policies. Here’s a dummy example:

const rolesPolicy = {
  roles: ["Admin", "User", "Guest"],
  actions: {
    resource: ["read", "write", "update", "delete"],
  },
  policy: {
    Admin: ["resource:*"],
    User: ["resource:read", "resource:write"],
    Guest: ["resource:read"],
  },
};

Creating an RBAC instance

Create an instance of the RBAC class by passing the rolesPolicy object:

const RBAC = require("light-rbac");
const rbac = new RBAC(rolesPolicy);

Checking access

Use the hasAccess method to check if a role has the required access:

const role = "User";
const action = "resource:write";

if (rbac.hasAccess(role, action)) {
  console.log(`${role} has access to ${action}`);
} else {
  console.log(`${role} does not have access to ${action}`);
}

Role Inheritance

You can define role inheritance in the policy. Use the syntax "r:role_name" to inherit all access permissions from another role. For example:

const rolesPolicy = {
  roles: ["Admin", "User", "Guest"],
  actions: {
    resource: ["read", "write", "update", "delete"],
  },
  policy: {
    Admin: ["resource:*"],
    User: ["resource:read", "resource:write"],
    Guest: ["resource:read"],
    SuperUser: ["r:Admin", "r:User"],
  },
};

In this example, the SuperUser role will have all the access permissions of both Admin and User.

Wildcard Permissions

You can use the * wildcard to grant all actions on a resource. For example, resource:* grants read, write, update, and delete permissions on the resource.

const rolesPolicy = {
  roles: ["Admin", "User", "Guest"],
  actions: {
    resource: ["read", "write", "update", "delete"],
  },
  policy: {
    Admin: ["resource:*"],
    User: ["resource:read", "resource:write"],
    Guest: ["resource:read"],
  },
};

In this example, the Admin role can perform any action on the resource.

Methods

hasAccess(role, action)

  • Parameters:

    • role (string): The name of the user's role.
    • action (string): The action that needs to be checked.
  • Returns: true if the role has the specified access, otherwise false.

Example

const rolesPolicy = {
  roles: ["Admin", "Editor", "Viewer"],
  actions: {
    document: ["read", "write", "delete"],
    comment: ["read", "write"],
  },
  policy: {
    Admin: ["document:*", "comment:*"],
    Editor: [
      "document:read",
      "document:write",
      "comment:read",
      "comment:write",
    ],
    Viewer: ["document:read", "comment:read"],
  },
};

const rbac = new RBAC(rolesPolicy);

console.log(rbac.hasAccess("Admin", "document:delete")); // true
console.log(rbac.hasAccess("Editor", "document:delete")); // false
console.log(rbac.hasAccess("Viewer", "comment:write")); // false
