Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

LeastSlackScheduler

Scheduler that processes jobs in order of slack

Terminology

Task

Task is an abstraction that represents a category of work. Tasks spawn jobs that the scheduler will work on. There are 3 subtypes of tasks.

Periodic

Periodic Tasks will spawn jobs based on a 'period'. This period is unique to each periodic task. It will start spawning jobs after a release time. The type of jobs it spawn is Hard.

Aperiodic

Aperiodic Tasks will spawn jobs based on some external request. The type of jobs it spawn is Soft.

Sporadic

Sporadic Tasks will spawn jobs based on some external request. The type of jobs it spawn is Hard.

Job

Job is a unit of work that contains a deadline that the scheduler will try to meet. Jobs have 2 subtypes.

Soft

SoftJobs have deadlines that are allowed to be missed therefore the scheduler will treat these as low priority.

Hard

HardJobs have deadlines that are not allowed to be missed therefore the scheduler will treat these as high priority.

Slack

Slack is the amount of time between job completion and deadline of the same job. Generally it is computed as

var slack = deadline - currentTime - estimatedComputationTime;

Slack can be negative meaning the deadline will be missed.

LeastSlackFirstScheduling

LeastSlackScheduling will run the jobs with the least amount of slack first. Note all hard jobs will be prioritized over all soft jobs. Therefore soft jobs will not be run until the hard job queue is empty.

Example

var LeastSlackScheduler = require("least-slack-scheduler").LeastSlackScheduler;
var Periodic = require("least-slack-scheduler").Tasks.Periodic;
var Sporadic = require("least-slack-scheduler").Tasks.Sporadic;

var helloLogger = () => {
  console.log("Hello World");
}

var goodbyeDelegate = () => {
  console.log("Goodbye");
}

var helloLoggerTask  = new Periodic({releaseTime:1000, executionTime:1, period: 2000, delegate:helloLogger});
var goodbyeTask = new Sporadic({executionTime:1, deadlineTime: 2000, delegate:goodbyeDelegate});

var leastScheduler = new LeastSlackScheduler({maxConcurrent:2});

leastScheduler.addTask("helloLogger", helloLoggerTask);
leastScheduler.addTask("goodbye", goodbyeTask);

leastScheduler.releaseJob("goodbye");

API

###LeastSlackScheduler

####Constructor({maxConcurrent: (Int)}) Constructs a new LeastSlackScheduler object will run a jobs at max concurrency.

####addTask(String taskName, Task task) Adds a task to the scheduler bound to the given name.

####releaseJob(String taskName, (optional) Object parameters) Spawns a job from a given taskName, the optional params will be past into the jobs/tasks delegate function when it invokes. Task must be registered using addTask before this function will work.
