Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

lastfm-listener

What is it? Why do I want it?

You can lastfm-listener to trigger events when a new song is played on a lastfm account.

Example Uses

Ok... so I know what it is... but why would I use it exactly?

Up to you!

Things that this oculd be usefull for:

  • "Currently playing" twitch banner on custom overlay
  • Desktop widget with currently playing
  • Web widget for what someones currently playing

API

lastfm-listener extends EventEmitter and has all of it's methods.

Constructor

const LastFM = require('lastfm-listener');
const options = {
    api_key: 'http://www.last.fm/api/',
    username: 'my lastfm username',
    rate: 5,
    alert_intial: true,
    only_if_playing: true
};

let lastFM = new LastFM(options);

Constructor Options

  • api_key - Your API key. You can get one here http://www.last.fm/api/. Required
  • username - The username you want to listen for songs at. Required
  • rate - How often in seconds you want to check the API. Optional, defaults to 5 seconds.
  • alert_intial - When the first song is loaded, do you want it to fire the event? Optional, defaults to true.
  • only_if_playing - Require song to have "currently playing" tag. Optional, defaults to false.

Methods

  • getLatestSong - Pretty self explantory. Will get the latest currently playing song.
  • checkSong - Force check to see if the song is new.
  • start - Start checking the API.
  • stop - Stop checking the API.
  • All EventEmitter methods .on, .emit, etc.

Example

lastFM.getLatestSong(function(song) {
    console.log(song.name); // "Never Gonna Give You Up"
    console.log(song.artist); // "Rick Astley"
    console.log(song.nowplaying); // True
});

lastFM.checksong(); // Force to check if there's a new song. Works even if not running.

lastFM.start(); // Start running the checker
lastFM.stop(); // Guess what this does...

Events

The only available event is 'song'. Bind it like this:

lastFM.on('song', function(song) {
    console.log(song.name); // "Never Gonna Give You Up"
    console.log(song.artist); // "Rick Astley"
});

Example Code

const LastFM = require('lastfm-listener');
const options = {
    api_key: 'http://www.last.fm/api/',
    username: 'my lastfm username',
    rate: 5,
    alert_intial: true,
    only_if_playing: true
};

let lastFM = new LastFM(options);

lastFM.on('song', (song) => {
    console.log("Details about new song! ", song);
});

lastFM.start();
