Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

kwalitee

Version 1.0.0

Description

This package is designed to give a community biased and opinionated metric to packages on NPM.

Over time, the community has built up a series of best practices in regards to what constitutes great packaging on NPM. As a lot of these are practices are unwritten or unknown to new comers (or even old comers); this tool should provide them with a great way in which to incrementally improve their package for wider use by the community.

This module is EXPECTED to change over time, with new metrics, improved metrics and perhaps even complete reversal on metrics that may be considered bad in future.

The hope is that this information will be used by the NPM registry directly so that the "kwalitee" metric can be tracked over time and improve with community involvement.

NB The kwalitee package is "self-hosting". kwalitee is run against itself to ensure that it is held to it's own opinions.

Please see Bugs if you have questions or concerns about these metrics.

Introduction

Use the kwalitee script with a path to a directory containing an NPM package. This directory must contain a package.json file.

kwalitee <path>

  Options:
    --help: Display this usage information
--verbose: Display extended information about kwalitee scoring
--no-color: Don't display scoring information with color
--parseable: Print scoring information in a machine readable way

The default output from the script is a percentage based on the score of the package out of the possible scoring available. For a breakdown of how the scoring was put together, use the verbose flag to get a full listing.

Checkers

Kwalitee uses a group of "checkers" to validate packages. These are broken out into functional aspects like so:

  • Package: static checks based on package.json
  • Tests: checks based around package testing
  • Addon: checks around use of native addon packages

If you have additional checks that you would like to see here, please submit a PR againt the github repository. While issues are appreciated, due to the nature of how specific these checks must be, PRs are far more likely to be brought in in a timely manor.
