Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

kimochii-pointer

A smooth and variable mouse pointer for JavaScript.

Demo

Used in my website.

https://akutagawa.dev/

Supported platforms

Tested on the latest version of major browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).

Installation

Install this package:

npm install --save kimochii-pointer
# yarn add kimochii-pointer

Install GSAP for smooth animation:

npm install --save [email protected]
# yarn add [email protected]

General usage

Initialize in your entry point:

import { KimochiiPointer } from "kimochii-pointer";

const pointer = new KimochiiPointer();

pointer.mount(); // Pointer will be shown to the display.

Set a shape name to custom attribute data-kimochii-pointer of HTML element you want to change the shape of pointer.

e.g.:

<button data-kimochii-pointer="sticky">BUTTON</button>

The pointer will be stuck to the element when you move over the one.

If you want to hide the default mouse cursor of the operation system, add the below style to your global CSS:

* {
  cursor: none !important;
}

Preinstalled shapes

There are preinstalled shapes that you can use without any steps.

Expanded

The pointer expands its scale.

<div data-kimochii-pointer="expanded"></div>

Sticky

The pointer sticks to the element.

<div data-kimochii-pointer="sticky"></div>

Text

The pointer stretches vertically like a text cursor.

<p data-kimochii-pointer="text"></p>

Hidden

The pointer hides its shape.

<div data-kimochii-pointer="hidden"></div>

Lighter

The pointer decreases its opacity.

<div data-kimochii-pointer="lighter"></div>

Create a custom shape

Below is an example of a custom shape that changes pointer color to pink (TypeScript).

import { Shape } from "kimochii-pointer";

// Create a custom shape.
class PinkShape implements Shape {
  name: Shape["name"] = "pink";

  private _pointer: Pointer;

  private _backup: Required<Pick<gsap.TweenVars, "backgroundColor">>;

  constructor(pointer: Pointer) {
    this._pointer = pointer;
    this._backup = {
      // Backup default pointer color to restore.
      backgroundColor: this._pointer.getProperty("backgroundColor"),
    };
  }

  transform: Shape["transform"] = () => {
    this._pointer.apply({ backgroundColor: "hotpink", overwrite: true });
  };

  restore: Shape["restore"] = () => {
    this._pointer.apply({ ...this._backup, overwrite: true });
  };
}

Register to the pointer:

import { KimochiiPointer } from "kimochii-pointer";

const pointer = new KimochiiPointer();
pointer.mount();

pointer.register(new PinkShape(pointer));

Use from HTML element.

<div data-kimochii-pointer="pink"></div>
