Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

SMART JSON Resume theme

Print-friendly & UX-friendly, customizable JSON Resume theme.

The theme generates html resume with the most important data visible as default, but allowing the viewer to peep at the details. This provides both: clean, one-page print and a thorough profile information at once. Plus, it's smart.

Motivation

Printed CVs are often advised to fit in one A4 page. On the other hand, this requirement hardly ever permits exhausting all the profile information we'd like to share. By implementing simple CSS techniques, this theme reconciles those two demands by providing the viewer with ability to choose what to see.

Installation and running

  1. Run npm install --production.
  2. Since this is a JSON Resume theme, proceed according to their's instructions:
    1. In the main directory, create a JSON file with you resume data in accordance with the resume schema. You can also add a photo.jpg.
    2. Install the JSON Resume tool by running npm install -g resume-cli.
    3. Run resume serve to see the output in a browser or resume export resume.html --theme smart / resume export resume.pdf --theme smart to generate the resume document. You can also publish your resume by following the instructions on the official website.

Development

This repository comes with some handy tools for the theme's development:

  • Gulp,
  • BrowserSync,
  • SASS,
  • Nunjucks,
  • JSON Resume Schema validator.

To start developing, follow the instructions:

  1. Run npm install.
  2. Run npm start.
  3. Do whatever you want to do with the scss source files, the template or the resume itself - the files will be processed and the browser will reload automatically.

Additional features

The theme provides some nifty, additional features, some of them going beyond the JSON Resume Schema:

  • (*) Ability to define maximum visible elements (revealed after mouse hover) using the resumeLimit.js config file. The limits are applied only to the root, array properties of the resume JSON;
  • (*) Ability to define the legal note at the bottom of the CV (often required by recruiters) inside the legalNote.js file;
  • Handling of the (excessive to the JSON Resume Schema) certifications field.

(*) Only for local development

TODOs

  • [ ] Support for all the rest of the Resume Schema's properties
  • [ ] Switching to RWD
  • [ ] Hide the photo if no path is supplied
  • [ ] Hide properties limited to 0 elements
  • [ ] Show all items with limit set to 0
  • [ ] Handle edge cases for undefined properties
