Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Iceblerg Logo

A no-frills static blog generator with an emphasis on easy integration.

iceblerg is essentially a blog build system. You supply the content and the templates, and iceblerg spits out a completed blog. It focuses on staying out of the way, providing the bare minimum featureset necessary.

iceblerg can easily be used in conjunction with a general build framework such as Gulp, and can supply its data to other systems as well. Unlike some other projects, you are not limited to the views supplied to you by iceblerg.

Please note that iceblerg is intended only for static sites. It does not and will not ever (well, maybe) have server components or features which require a running web server. If you need something similar which does boast such capabilities, I encourage you to check out Poet.

Note: This project is new and unstable. Much of the documentation has yet to be written. Documentation Completion Status:

  • README.md - 90%
  • Examples - 30%
  • Wiki - 0%
  • Code - 2%

###Contents:

Getting Started with iceblerg

This guide assumes you already have Node.js and npm installed, and have at a basic knowledge of their usage.

  1. If you haven't already, create a directory in which to store your blog.
  2. Open a terminal in that directory and install iceblerg using npm install iceblerg
  3. Create your build file (henceforth known as build.js.) It will run iceblerg and generate your blog. Paste this into it.
// Pull in iceblerg. (Having previously installed it with 'npm install iceblerg')
var iceblerg = require('iceblerg');

// Create a new instance of iceblerg. This allows you to have multiple blogs in
// the same site or project.
var myBlerg = new iceblerg();

// Build the blog model. This pulls in all the post data and builds all the
// interconnection trees.
myBlerg.buildModel(function(model) {
  // Generate the blog using the model built.
  myBlerg.generate(model);

  // You can also do other things with the model like rendering custom pages or passing
  // blog data to other services.
});
  1. Create two directorys, posts and templates. These are the default directories from which iceblerg generates the blog.
  2. Create a new file (henceforth known as hello-world.md) in the posts directory and paste this into it. (See Post Format for an explanation of the file)

## Hello World!
***
==[END PREVIEW]==

Well, what do you know, this appears to be a **Blog Post!**
Ooh, I can use *Markdown* in it!
  1. Download the example templates from the example repository and paste them into the templates directory so that the final structure is like so:
My Blog/
  | build.js
  | posts/
      | hello-world.md
  | templates/
      | post.jade
      | tag.jade
      | author.jade
      | overview.jade

Take a closer look at those templates to see how to build your own. It's really not that hard. If you'd like to use a different template language, such as lo-dash, follow the custom template langauge guide. 7. Head back to the terminal and run node build.js. Your freshly-generated site should now be sitting in a new directory called out. Open out/main/overview.html in a web browser to take a look!

See? That wasn't so bad was it? All the files for this guide can be found here in the example repository. Now go and make your super-awesome blerg.

Features

  • File-based posts written in Markdown (default, switchable) and metadata specified with YAML.
  • Easy templating with Jade (default, switchable) with clearly defined conventions.
  • Entire blog model is supplied to every template along with page-specific variables, allowing for incredible flexibility.
  • Simple API and Configuration.
  • Support for multiple blergs per project.
  • Plenty of helper functions and methods.
  • Included Moment.js
  • < 500 LOC (currently)

Output Format

The generated site (for the post below) should look something like this:

out/
  | main/ - Contains special pages which do not fit into a category.
    | overview.html - The blog overview. Lists all posts, tags, and authors.
  | posts/ - Contains the generated html pages for each post.
    | A Lesson in Generic Articles.html - The generated html for the article shown below.
  | tags/ - Contains pages which list all articles the named tag.

All posts are listed newest-to-oldest unless otherwise specified.

For more information on the templates used, see the template documentation

Post Format

The beginning of the file should start with these YAML variables, surrounded by three dashes. (---) Additional optional variables may be found below.

Below, type the post content. The default parser is Markdown (marked.)

The ==[END PREVIEW]== tag tells iceblerg to use the preceding text as the post preview. Other methods for specifying the preview may be found below.

## Article I - Introduction
Good day my good ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you this concept which I shall now endeavor to make known to you in great depth.

==[END PREVIEW]==

For indeed, this lesson which you shall not soon forget is best
learned in Latin, the language of the sciences. Therefore, due to my desire to teach you to the best of my human ability, I shall be using that great language for the rest of this text.

## Article II - Lorem Ipsum

The resulting post file should now look like this:

Documentation

Examples

Examples can be found in the examples repository.

TODO

  • Fill in wiki docs and finish writing examples.
  • Add proper error handling. At the moment it is almost non-existant.
  • Add support for pagnation in templates which list posts. Haven't decided how.
  • Add support for post-specific templates.
  • Add support for configurable individual template paths.
  • Add support for configurable individual output paths.
  • Make URL handling more robust.
  • Add support for post subdirectories. Right now the directory name is prepended to the post name and the directory structure flattened.
  • Finish documenting code.
  • Add tests.

F.A.Q.

Q: How do I change the template language?

A: See the documentation on adding a custom template language

Q: Can I run this on an express/connect/apache/nginx/etc. server?

A: No, but you can generate the output and upload it to be served statically.

Q: Can I use this with [INSERT BUILD SYSTEM HERE]

A: Most likely, but you might have to be a bit creative. I'm (probably) not going to add specific support for anything, but it should work well with Gulp at least. Just wrap your gulp.src call inside of the buildModel function.

Q: Why is there no command-line wrapper?

A: Because, simply, you'd probably write a shell script to automate the build process anyway. Since we're already using Node.js, why add more complexity? If you want to write a cli interface feel free. :)

Q: Why is the code so terrible and ugly?

A: I wrote this in an afternoon, I needed a blog framework for my site. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

<_<
>_>

Q: Why Iceblerg? What do icebergs have to do with blog frameworks?

A: [INSERT DEEP AND WELL THOUGHT OUT, BUT KIND OF GENERIC RESPONSE ABOUT THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG HERE]

Q: Why "Blerg?"

A: No idea.

About

iceblerg is written and maintained by @Tribex.

No penguins or polar bears were harmed in the making of this project. However, I do feel great remorse and regret for what happened to the leopard seals.

Fun fact, it took longer to write the documentation for iceblerg than it did to write the project itself. -_-
